My horse has been scratching a bit more lately but in the last couple of days he has been climbing up and down the stable walls itching his tail and his mane on the door edge. I inspected his tail to find it looking rather bog brush like and sparse looking. I have covered him in fly repellent today and a fly sheet, I believe the boett ones are the best and will look into investing in one of those.
I have been told that BB is good
What daily care routine should I be practising to keep him comfortable?
I have never had a horse with sweet itch before so every bit of help and advice will be gratefully recieved.

He may still be itchy for a while even if you get a rug as they are allegic to the midges bites and this has set up a reaction already. You need to keep him scrupulously clean then use Benzile Benzoate twice a day works for us, plus the usual fly spray.
If there is any sores we use Herbavet cream but most herbal ones work. You can try and get your BB from a large chemist like Books and ask them
to order it special in the largest bottle you can get.
Good luck

Do you put the BB all over or just the affected areas.
Why does the itching come out in the mane and tail, why don't they rub where the midge bites them.

I am not an expert and there are some good threads on here about itif you do a search, but its like a mosquito bite that doesnt hurt so much at the beginning, but then after a while it itches like crazy. Bad cases can itch all over, I have seen ponies trying to scratch their tummies, it depends on how bad they get it.
We put the BB on the mane and tail.

Midges will bite only in certain places - the mane and tail being two of them.

Bring him in at dusk when midges are thier worst, make sure the stable is cool and fly free, turn him out again through the night, if the midges are very bad where you are bring him in at dawn and out again when its dark.
Use BB on any affected areas, a boett rug is an excellent idea, I spray mine in flyspray and wash my horse in a fly repelling wash once a day when the weather permits, this keeps him clean, soothes his skin and repels the flys all in one go!
I bought some of those fly strips that go around thie necks, you can also buy them for legs and they really work, fantastic things. Global herbs also do a feed supplement for flies called Fly Free which seems to work although they also do one specifically for sweetitch called SkratchPlus and another called SuperSkratch, both I believe are effective.
When I bought my horse he was awful with sweetitch, he had rubbed out all his mane and half the hair on his neck and all the top of his tail and most of his back and quarters, he has sores all ove rhim and he was miserable. Three years later and all his coat has grown back and his tail looks fab and his mane is getting there! I went overboard with remedies but its works and he lives a happy life and doesnt have to wear a fly rug anymore.

My yearling filly has terrible sweet itch which is now very much so under control.
As I am unwilling to buy her a boett until she i fully grown she has got a combo fly rug which really helps her.
I started by using BB although I found with her that it made her worse - she hated it being put on and was unwilling to be caught for this reason. Instead I use a product made by alva international called alvasweet which has cleared it right up and she loves it being applied.
Once a week or so I wash her mane and tail using medicated shampoo and swe also has NAF D-Itch feed supplement.

i use sudocrem - aka nappy rash cream.
it's an excellent fly repellent, it's waterproof, and also helps to heal open sores and soothes itching, it's easy to apply and lasts all day, it's also very cheap. Just slap it on - mind your horse probably will look a bit funny with loads of white blobs on him/her but it's better than bald weeping ones.

Hi, I have said on another thread that i have just discovered Head and Shoulders for men. It works well on itchy/sweetitch horses. Also don't apply Benzyl Benzoate if they have sore areas because it stings.

Spray savlon! Has saved my pony's tummy this year- he sits down with a back leg under his tum and scratches and scratches and scratches.....
I've been spraying it on twice a day. Have tried sudocreme etc, but prefer this as doesnt leave sticky residue, which makes him itch more! Also BB, fly-away and some dodson and horrel(?! or is that feed?!) bright yellow rocket fuel stuff! Oh and a fly rug
Hope he's feeling better Williamsis!

my pony has chronic sweet itch. i use a snuggy hoods rug & have found itch stop salve from nettex works really well for her. the manufacturers say it only needs applying once a week but i find that any sore bits clear up quickly with daily application within a week (the hair also starts to grow back quickly). i don`t know if it does make any difference but i have read that feeding as little molasses as possible can help ie cubes rather than coarse mix.

I know you've been inundated with recommendations for lotions and potions, but the best thing I found is Equimins Biting Midge Cream. My horse actually over-reached whilst trying to scratch his tail in the stable (almost sat down) and most products didn't seem to touch it. The other thing I've heard works well is Camrosa - I do use it, but haven't for Sweet itch, but it repels the midges and forms a sort of barrier to stop them getting through. It does take a few days for the itchiness to go away though even after you've stopped the biting, so the Benzyl Benzoate is still a good idea for this.
Good luck - it's a bit of a nightmare isnt it !

Try some arnica clay. My horse was really itchy about 3/4 weeks ago to the point where he had rubbed the skin on his face away and drawn blood. I applied some arnica clay and he never scratched them again. Skin and hair have grown back nicely.
Now my horse doesn't have sweet itch but the clay brought instant relief and may be worth a try with your horse.

Talk to your vet about dectomax injections - on off licence product usually used to worm cattle - and in mange/leg mites. It generally works well for SI. It's given by sub cu injection.
Rugs - a vote here for Rambo's sweet itch hoody - tough as old boots. Mine trashed 3 boetts in about 3 seconds.
Also there has been some suggestion that copper deficiency is implicated - need a copper-rich spplmt or copper sulphate - but I don't yet know the dosage so don't do this without knowing more.
Hope this helps? SI is a living nightmare for horse AND it's people.
8.23 - where do you get arnica clay? Mine has bad face!

I went to Holland & Barratt. You can buy it as a powder. I then purchased some homeopathic arnica, put some in the clay and added some water until it was quite thick and pasty so it will stay on. I put this on not really expecting any lasting effect but he never scratched again. I keep a small tub in my horsey first aid kit to be used on cuts too. Hope this helps.

How big is your horse? The Icelandic pony website do a rug exactly the same as the Boett in medium but only £80!
There's also some in Hue and Hott from Germany for a similar price.
Just search on the 'net for fly sheets/blankets, and you'll find loads of them.
