Would anyone with experience of sarcoids consider buying a horse with them? Have just found my DREAM horse, ride and drive cob of 15.1, good in traffic, has done Le Trec, local shows, RC stuff etc. Only prob is he has two small sarcoids, one on his inner hindleg, the other on his sheath area. Havent got him vetted or made a firm offer yet, owner was very open about the fact, what else? he's 9 y.o.
What would you think or should I keep looking?

IMHO I wouldnt personally, I bought my daughter's pony then found he had sarcoids, and we had several bad years with them around his sheath, as they grew enormous! Vet tied them off, and eventually and luckily they all disappeared, but he was only 3. Not sure about a 9 y.o, you could be asking for many years of heartache.

I came into posession of a 15 year old mare with established sarcoids last year, so far they haven't been a problem, and are being managed with homeopathic medication. She has a large one on her chest which is a little unsightly, but other than that, she is a wonderful horse and I wouldn't swap her for the world.
The only real problem for her is if they erupt, and the flies get to them - since she went onto the homeopathic treatment they have shrunk and not caused any trouble - in warmer weather I use the bright yellow fly cream on them, and it seems to really help. Purple spray also keeps them dried out and clean.
If you think the horse is worth a little extra trouble, go for it - I know people who compete on blind horses, ponies with prosthetic legs, a few sarcoids can be treated. Have a chat to the owner and see if you can find out the history of his sarcoids - how long has he had them, do they grow, expand, erupt very often etc. If he's had them a few years and they haven't changed much, chances are they won't grow much more.

My cob got very agressive sarcoids, and had surgery twice (1 massive tumor between hind legs, grew rapidly, some to chest area, a lot to sheath area) We thought he was going to have to be put down.
As a last resort we tried Camrosa ointment, and it cured them. That was 2 years ago - I just keep my eyes peeled for anything 'suspicious', and any odd lumps I put Camrosa on and they vanish. Vet gobsmacked!

It might be worth pointing out that there have also been some cases where camrosa have made sarcoids worse and hair fall out.

My last mare had sarcoids (2). There looked quite a lot like warts and never changed, grew bigger, errupted etc.
Can you have you vet have a look? Is the owner likely to be honest ith you about the treatment the horse has had?
If he is your absolute drem horse in every way then I wouldn't let this put you off until you've done some investigation! Also, if you're keeping your horse at livery check that they're okay with it - I knew one yard that threw out a horse when they discovered that it had sarcoids as the YO beleived that they were infectious and the virus 'coul be carried on the wind' and infect other horses!!!
Good luck - this horse deserves a happy home home too.

We bought our Holly with sarcoids and after a year of treating with Ekoneem (organic, environmental, pure Neem Oil) they have gone to the point where you can only just feel it a bit under the skin, they used to be like blood filled golf balls and Ekoneem is fantastic and I know it won't harm her in any way.
www.ekoneem.com is the site to get it off, the lady is local to me here in Scotland and it's great stuff for all skin irritations, grazes, cuts & wounds, mites, lice and a great fly spray too.
If the sarcoids are in a place that doesn't deter you from riding it will be okay to treat but just be careful and in my opinion sarcoids are often due to stress, our Holly's sarcoids are a result of having a broken hip as a foal and the stress of it healing without any help.

Back again - thanks for all your comments. Its a 50/50 chance when all is said and done. But it was his owner who said they were sarcoids, reading the descriptions of what other owners have shared, his arent anywhere near as big. They are more like grey scaly warts, the size of a 20p coin. I've read up on sarcoids so I'm guessing theyre a type too but would this be less severe than the huge growths i've seen on online vet websites?
Owner is great, not a bit fussed whether he's sold or not and seems 100% genuine and hes open to any vet. My vet is away for Easter so nothing I can do until shes back but will probably spend the weekend dreaming about this handsome cream cob :-(
I dont have a photobucket account but is there anyway I can attache a pic to a post so some of you kind people might take a look? Im NOT asking for your to decide but I really appreciate your opinions and honesty.
Cheers,
Jen.

To anon 11:52, I did say 'in my opinion', it's what I believe and feel to be true and from all the people I know who also have horses with sarcoids, when they delve back into their pasts there is almost always a reason of stress around the area where the sarcoids are. Nothing scientific I'm afraid but my belief.
I also believe that as we've found Holly's problem and are treating her 'as a whole' throughoout her body and mind by giving her good natural food with a good natural field and with a herd which doesn't change we feel she is becoming calmer, mentally stable and happy in herself which is condusive to natural healing and a more stressless life.

My horse had sarcoids, and I got in touch with - I THINK it was Liverpool University a couple of years ago following a bit in a horsey mag. They were doing extensive research into sarcoids and were offering to send their findings to horse owners.
They sent me (free! a) glossy paperback book with all sorts of info in it, photos etc. Sods law I cant find it at the moment, I just looked! However, one of the findings was that some sarcoids appear to be linked to seasonal flies.
Strangely enough, my boy first got them at the end of May 3 years ago. He needed to have them removed by cryosurgery. The hairless scars started to erupt again the next May (Now out of insurance) and in desperation I tried Camrosa - as mentioned above - and it worked! Last May, yet again, they erupted and warts covered his sheath - 2 of which rapidly grew into sarcoids. I applied Camrosa and the whole lot went.
I am expecting the same this year, and am being very vigilant, Camrosa at the ready!
Ref: the negative Camrosa comments above - all I can say is that like the other poster it worked miracles for me BUT there is always a chance of allergy with anything. Witness the recent posts about Avon Skin So Soft - some people raving about how brilliant it is as a fly repellant, others reporting sores/swelling/loss of hair! This is the same with any product, horse, people , whatever. My son is allergic to a certain brand of washing powder! If it agrees with your horse it really is a miracle cure

The 'Liverpool Treatment' is by Derek Knottenbelt. Your vet takes a photo and sends it off to him, he sends a cream back for the vet to apply once every two days for 5 sessions.
Sarc-Ex used with Restore is also good.
Be careful with Camrosa there's been a complaint about it which was upheld (something about it claiming to be 'safe' and not to contain certain things which have subsequently been proved to be included in it). I know quite a few people who say that it's toxic and wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, some of these are well respected and very experienced horse people. One of them threw the whole lot away after just a couple of treatments because it made things much, much worse.
