Subject : Sarcoids - Tried all sorts..any advice?

Hi,
My horse has got Axillery and Inguinal Sarcoids in the creases of his forelegs and chest and I need any advice on different methods of getting rid of the pesky buggers!
He's had them for as long as I've had him (4 years) and the previous owner had treated them too.
He has had them surgically removed by the vet, treated with Cytotoxic cream and Liverpool Cream (all put on by the vet), so as you can imagine, it's costing a fortune!
I've heard people saying Reiki helped, so if anyone can send some my geldings way - it would be gratefully appreciated.
My vet and I agreed that Camrosa probably wouldnt help as the Cytotoxic cream is similar but stronger and they havn't gone!
My friend suggested Haemorrhoid cream...yes, you read that right!!! Pile cream and although I can see where she's coming from, I won't be going down that root!
Has anyone got any suggestions as to any natural methods or treatments which they think could help my gelding?
They are driving me (and my poor boy) crazy!
Please help.
Thanks, Bexta x

Can only sympathise, by boy has one on his sheath, and its particularly nasty at present.
So far in two years I have done nothing about it apart from keep it clean and as free from flies as I can, as I have not yet had any advice that I feel able to follow.
Does your horse get upset when you touch them?

there is a company called GEOTA who use essential oils. They are currently runing trials of an essential oil mix that gets rid of sarcoids. The results have been out of this world and even vets cannt believe how good this product is. They need case studies as they need to treat x number of horses before they can publish the results and start advertising it. The number is 01869 347050

I used neem oil on our mare over the summer. The one on her inner thigh has gone and the one on her chest has shrunk a lot.Hers were occult ones though so different. Must be worth a try at approx £12 for a pot. Do a google search or Pauhla at animoils sells it on ebay, good in fly repellant too!

sorry being thick here before i cant remember the different types of sarcoids! My pony had the "dangly" ones and a flat one on his belly which grew and grew! The vet tied off the dangly ones after we had tried lots of "potions" none of which helped. They dropped out and apparently triggered his immune system into working, which killed all the others - has been two years now and no reoccurance

One of our horses had sarcoids which we treated several times with the Liverpool cream with limited success. My vet then tried out a new treatment which involved the use of a chemical applied to the sarcoid and then activated with light of a specific wavelength. It has been amazingly successful. As far as I know he is the only one is the UK that has tried this although it is being used a bit more widely in the US. If anyone would like more info you can e-mail me on tobianaDOTscottATbtopenworldDOTcom

My pony's dropped off, sort of hatched and then grew back, this has happened twice, this is his last year:
Can anyone tell me what type it is?

Sharon, my boy has one exactly like that and in the same place too. I tried a six month course of Hilton Herbs but it got bigger, I'm afraid. I am not willing to use any kind of strong, burning type stuff on it as he pulls it up inside sometimes and I don't want to damage sensitive tissue up there. Also, he really does not want to have it touched, not becuase it hurst, I don't think, but he is not keen on having that part of his anatomy touched at all. He will let me wash his sheath but stands on tiptoe telling me to hurry up and get it over with.
The only thing I can think of now is to ask the vet to try tying it off if possible although it hasn't really got a "stalk", I wondered if tying round the base would work. Otherwise, I am in the dark and will be most interested in replies.

They sound exactly the same kofihorse.
When the one my horse has 'hatched' it was like a mini brain! very hard.
It all healed up then came back worse.

Thats the main type our pony had, our vet tied off the ones he could, and the rest just died off over a period of a few months

Thank you for all your replies and advice!
Sharon, the picture of your horses sarcoid on his sheath is the same type that I'm having problems with at the moment except my boys is in his armpit so to speak! They are horrible things arent they?
Also, he doesnt mind me cleaning them up as I think he finds it quite soothing when I bathe them. I just can't shift them!
They do go down (if they are still under his skin) but always come back.
As soon as they erupt (like the one in the picture) - It's so difficult to get rid of them!
Sharon, I'm certainly no expert but your horse's looks like a Fibroblastic sarcoid, though as I said, I am no expert.
Thanks again for your advice everyone, I'll scroll up again and make a list of the different things mentioned.
Hopefully, something will work.

My horse first got one in his 'armpit' three years ago, its the size of a small sprout I suppose but has never errupted or changed much, just a dark lump with a little dry skin on the top.
Thanks for the advice too.
My horse is now a bit sensitive about me touching his bits, I have to go very slowly and I cant get wound powder on at all now.
Really dont know what to do about it, he is insured so I supposed I could get the vet to take a look, but last time he just said to leave it be.

Sharon, my vet also said I could just leave them and see if they went, as nothing seems to shift his.
This is why I'm asking for any ideas on natural methods as I feel like I've tried most options.
You sound as confused as me as to what to do, I hope we both find something that works..Good Luck.

My other horse got lots of sarcoids when he was two, this would have been about 8 years ago.
I knew little about them then and took him to a clinic where they were surgically removed and then frozen where they had been (Cryosurgery)
I dosed him up with Hilton Herbs Ditton and picked as many cleavers as I could carry each day and fed him these and he has never ever had another. Just has white spots where they were.
But I think its more down to luck than treatment to be honest.

One of my mares developed a very fast growing sarcoid on her forearm - I used the homeopathic remedy thuja (3x daily tablets and cream) before I tried anything stronger. Sarcoid gave up the ghost and dropped off within a few weeks and has never returned. Tried the same remedy on my gelding's sheath sarcoid with no success (don't ask me the various types of sarcoid, but his was a slow-growing warty type). I decided to leave his because it wasn't causing a problem. However, I later had him treated with various energy-based therapies (not Reiki, but on the same lines) and a side-effect was that his sarcoid exploded into action for a few days, dropped off and has never grown back.

A horse on our yard had one above her left eye and one under her belly - the vet treated them with a cream based on a medicine used in the treatment of luekiemia ( cannot spell ). He applied it three times and the root of the sarcoid died and they fell off.

I can speak from seeing Junes horse who had the sarcoids and knowing how the Liverpool treatment causes pain and often they seem to come back and worse the scarring that has been left on many horses. I think its worth considering contacting her regards this other treatment.
Her horse has very little to see from this treatment afterwards unlike the Liverpool cream.

The treatment I mentioned before that my vet has tried on my horse really has worked wonders. She had a sarcoid on the inside of her thigh which rubbed on her belly when she walked. It was the size of a tennis ball and obviously very sore. It was treated several times with the Liverpool cream and came back each time. Following that treatment she was extremely sore for several days and could hardly move. After being treated with the light activated chemical it has now gone. The horse was in no discomfort after treatment and was turned out as normal the next day. She then got one between her hind legs which was again treated in the same way with great success.
Do e-mail me at the address I left earlier on on the thread. I'm sure my vet would be willing to talk to you about it.

Elenor - where can i get the aloe vera gel from? Also, did your horse mind? Was there any discomfort or was it quite soothing?
My boy's sarcoid has started to smell putrid!!
He's had them for years and they have never smelt, this one started smelling yesterday and it's vile!
I washed it with salt water but it smells worse than ever!
Anyone else had this problem and if so, why is it suddenly smelling and what wash can I use to stop it!?
