My friends old pony suffered a bad bout of Colic last night. He is 25 yrd old and is generally fit and healthy.
The vet has said that this has been probably caused by reduced intake of water because it was too cold to drink. The vet has advised that we should take the edge of water by adding some warm to it just so that it isn't freezing cold when drunk.
Also said that feeds should be mixed with warm water this time of year to help warm them from inside.
Thankfully he is ok albeit a little off today.
I shall be adding some warm water to my horses bucket tonight!

Are you on sandy soil at all? My friend's horse suffers every year as we are on sandy soil and when she pulls frozen grass up it pulls sand with it. This brings on colic. She puts Psylium (spelling?) in her feeds and it really helps. No colic for 2 years now.

Have often heard that you should never let a horse drink cold water but don't wild horses break ice to drink?
What about horses that are out 24/7?

thats what I have thought. It obviously doesn't suit some. If you think if we drink a glass of ice cold water it can give us tummy ache.

My friend had the same with her old one as well this week. Vet is adamant that it was due to cold water...
Two in one week it can't be a coincidence (sp!).
Let this be a warning to us all. I have taken the 'edge' of our waters tonight with some hot water added to the top of the water bookets.

Luckily I've got an outside hot tap (the only one not frozen!!!) so I've been bucketing the girls warm water down to them.
They have speedi beet which when mixed with hot water swells and is ready in 2 mins so they have warm feed.
Adding a bucket of hot water to the water buckets before bed time works wonders.

molly had colic on monday, gave me such a fright, the vet didn't seem to know what caused it, they do have a big bath with their water in and it would be very hard to warm that up, will defiantely add some warm water to their feed now though, i have to break the ice on the water trough for them, have done this every year without any problems, they live out 24/7 unrugged but with shelter, god! they are such a worry!! eileen x

Pony is still not right. Going back down to stables with my friend in a bit to check him. He is only nibbling his food and has had hardly anything to drink.
He has had another painkiller today which was left by the vet. In the last 24 hours he has passed only 2 or 3 droppings. He has a lot of gut noise but is obvioulsy uncomfortable. If he still isn't right when we go back down then she is going to have the vet again.
What a nightmare.

The gypsy ponies oppsite me have a smouldering (not raging & spitting) bonfire in the field in weather like this! (they don't build it themselves obviously!) and their water is not too far from that. The old mare even stands with her hooves in the ashes, looking most content! It made me think that is not such a bad idea, and may do it for my horses in future years.
