Who doesn't use rugs to keep warm. I mean, obviously if your horse needs a fly rug in summer or a cooler after work that's different. But who doesn't rug their horses apart from for a specific purpose.
Now that we're about half way through winter and I'm hoping to put sherb out full time early this year, I'm wishing i hadn't rugged him because then his coat would have been better for the weather when he goes out. Obviously now it's done, it's done, but I'm thinking of next year, if I just don't rug him up next winter, would he be ok all winter. He's a welsh D by the way. Also answers for Hatty who is a heavy shire/tb cross.
Thanks

so he doesn't need them. I know from the unrugged bits that his coat grows like a woollly mammoth so given I don't show and what not, there's no need next winter to bother I don't think. Thanks Simone :-)

Two of mine have been well rugged throughout their showing careers and my rising 3 yr old was rugged last year, but this year they all lived out until the beginning of Dec unrugged, grew huge coats even tho' they are all TB or nearly TB and they are now in at night and still unrugged.

Flynn is only rugged so I could work him through the winter - I like to get him out of the field so his feet can dry up a bit every once in a while! But I can't afford for him to get to sweaty as he's not clipped and I've got no stable to keep him in to dry off. So rugging keeps the winter coat at bay:-) He has spend other years without a rug on.

I've not bothered to rug my heavy cob this winter as it's been so mild generally (although cold snap on it's way to Essex). She doesn't need a rug on anyway as she's a toughie fat blimp with a good coat. I've just got a new loan cob though and he's been rugged up this winter so I'll keep him rugged as he's not got half the natural coat that my cob has. They live out 24/7 with field shelter and lots of natural hedge shelter.

Brambles a heavy Shire X Dutch and if she wasnt being ridden she wouldnt be rugged, its just to keep her clean & dry really, she is quite happy without. Sec D should be OK as well without, having said that the one we had was not the hardy type, he had his rug on as soon as it went a bit cool or wet! The other cobs we have had have been hardy and never really saw a rug.

M is only wearing a no-fill rug because she's starting to work hard and as such is clipped. Also keeps her clean for those days when the choice would be ride or groom but not enough light to do both!
Otherwise I'd only pop one on when it's wet AND windy.
