I wore long boots for many years but then bought a pair of joddy boots and chaps and wow so much more comfy and felt closer to the horse could never go back to long boots now - I have leather gaiters and black boots for the showring as well as find long leather boots so uncomfy and also have large calves so fitting is a real problem

I only started wearing chaps when I bought Ariats for the first time because of the laces coming undone if you didn't. I have some lovely Kitt chaps for the winter - warm neoprene. But just light ones for the summer. I do still wear joddy boots sometimes in the summer - but prefer my Ariats. I've just ordered a pair of Muddies which are supposedly for yard and riding in - they were an amazing price at this website :- www.fredsclothing.co.uk

I prefer short boots most of the time because I can wear my jod boots with jods, jeans, tracksuit bottoms etc for mucking out or it I can't be bothered wearing proper riding clothes. And can add half chaps or full chaps if needed. Long boots + full suede chaps is just too much for me to be comfortable. And I'm happy to wear steel toecap jod boots for faffing on the yard as well as riding, would worry about damaging nice long boots.
I do have some really nice mountain horse sportive high riders which are lovely to ride in but just not practical for me to use for everyday stuff so save those for competitions and lessons.

Definatley long boots for me ;D I have a pair of Mountain Horse Rimfrost Riders, and they are brillant!! I only have to wear a pair of trainer socks underneath, and my feet still stay sooo warm! They are lovely to ride in and brilliant for on the yard too! They are expensive, but worth every penny ;D
