Just to add further balance to the Parelli threads I thought we could all share what we find good about IH I would say no arguments, but I dont think I will need to on here!

A long list! But in essence, I love that it is based on common sense, rather than specified way of working. As long as it's kind and fair, and makes sense to the horse nothing is excluded. It's not prescriptive. Although it's very much based on Monty, other ideas are always welcome. Yes, there is join up and Kelly's exercises but you don't have to do any of these to be IH-minded, you just have to think and listen to your horse.

Agreed LizP, and that is what makes it preferable to certain other NH methods, in that it it is not dogmatic and all encompassing.

As others have said - anything that is fair and safe and we can all learn from (person and horse). Encouragement of a variety of tools rather than "only one way". And of course, a network of wonderful RA's. ;D

As an RA I love having the support of the office and a definite quality control set up. Kelly is extremely supportive and I have great colleagues locally.
I would also echo everything said by Liz P. I am allowed to think for myself, ask for a case conference if I need to and explore other avenues if a horse needs it.
I also like the whole ethos of no violence. It's so relaxing knowing that no-one ever expects you to go there.

To me the good thing about IH is that, although many people don't realise it, it teaches what many of the real old HORSEMEN used to teach us about horses, and their care, but this knowledge is now more readily available on a huge scale due to the teachings of Monty and Kelly. In other words, everyone with a horse, not just the privileged few who knew such men, can now learn how to handle a horse not only physically, but psychologically as well, which to my mind is the most important knowledge to have. It also gives us this lovely DG without which, we all never would have "known" each other.

i reckon the best thing is that it is still very personal, like the fact tha RA's are all kept in contact with and have meetings each year etc, and that kelly and mont are still apporachable to the public, like at demo's, they always give their time to speak to people about problems, also on the phones, like when people ring the office, i reckon thats very important!

I am ditto-ing this, as I probably couldnt put it so concisely.

i like the helpfulness and humor, although i suppose i'm talking more about the forum I find that natural horsemanship works very well with the babies and makes them nicer individuals with trainable temperments.

Drat, SS3 got there first ;D but would like to echo "this DG". It was a lifeline when I started my IH route 6 years ago and looking for a different and more sensitive way of doing things with my first horse. Plus "meeting" all you lovely folk! ;D
Oh, and I really REALLY enjoy the courses, where experienced and inexperienced come together and no judgment is passed and there's no looking down noses at people! And the coaching team are second to none ...

Well, the forum's pretty good!
Also like the non-prescriptiveness of IH and the general attitude of looking to solve the problem rather than blame (and bash!) the horse.

I think what JanetGeorge said on the Bad Thread sums it up--all IH teaches is proper horsemanship, particularly to people who got lumbered with the mindless teaching and handling in certain riding schools (not BHS ones, necessarily!) which revolves around the central principle that if something goes wrong, the horse is taking the p!ss and trying to make a fool of you
