After a recommendation from a number of fellow DG'ers, I put Yogi onto Pernamax, which is basically made up of New Zealand green lipped mussel extract which contains naturally occuring Chondroitin Sulphate. If you have a look at www.maxavita.com/products/pet/pernamaxequine/ there's a lot more info. This bit is interesting, whether it's just marketing spiel I dont' know, but Yogi is certainly very happy on it (he has DJD in both hocks) and regularly plays rearing games with his field mate: Joint mobility can vary in horses and ponies of all ages and breeds and is a common concern to many owners Glucosamine is the most widely accepted natural supplement for these problems. Unfortunately, and a fact that most companies don't like to advertise is, glucosamine itself does not offer any short-term support in maintaining healthy joint mobility, which is arguably what you are looking for in a joint care product, and what Pernamax™ Equine has been scientifically developed to deliver. Pernamax™ Equine is amazingly effective compared to the plethora of questionable pharmaceutical and alternative remedies that are purported to be useful for painful equine arthritis and joint inflammation. If you have used products such as Apple Cider Vinegar, MSM (Methyl Sulphonyl Methane), Chondroitin Sulphate, Emu Oil, Devils Claw (and the many other herbal remedies), you will probably have been disappointed with the results (if any) because they all require very long-term use to see or feel any results, not the 7~10 days that Pernamax™ Equine takes to be effective. We hope that if you choose to try our scientifically proven Pernamax™ Equine you, and more importantly, your horse will be very satisfied repeat customers. This is why Pernamax™ Equine is so unique, we can provide fast acting ingredients scientifically proven and tested by leading veterinarians to work and be effective in less than 2 weeks. Fast acting, improvement can be seen almost immediately, after only a week you should see for yourself an improvement in your horses swelling and mobility.

That Pernamax info doesn't actually tell you WHY it is so much better than other stuff, they seem to just state that they are, lol.
I have always accepted that joint supplements won't work in the short-term, it is the long-term benefit we want after all.

I used a green lipped mussel extract thingy a few years ago for a long time - sadly it didn't deliver the results it said it would. Cortaflex was better than that stuff!

LOL However, if you look at this bit of blurb for New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel extract: www.1stvitality.co.uk/az/green_lipped_mussels/green_lipped_mussels.htmAnd the active constituents are Glucosamine, Omega 3s, chondroitin, naturally occuring antihistamines and phenylanaline - all to be found in the other commonly available joint supplements. Certainly, when I put Lutine on Top Spec 10:10, which is Glucosamine and MSM, she was markedly better within a week.

I gave my old horse Gold Label Glucosamine Supplement which was relatively cheap - I dont know if it is still available. Lady lived to be almost 30 (she died of cushings-related problems) but she was as supple as a young horse right to the end of her days. I use glucosamine myself and it really seems to help.

Casper has MSM powder and Liquid Glucosamine/Chrondroitin mixed in with his anti-lam and its done wonders for his stiffness. I also use the liquid Glucosamin/Chrondroitin for my own arthritis and the age related stiffness in my two Border Collie girls and find it very good. The liquid is purchased from Zipvit and costs me £29.95 for 3 bottles and at the moment get the 4th bottle free and it lasts ages considering we all use it. Casper and I like the mixed fruit flavour, but the collies like the orange flavour. Casper has two capfuls twice daily in his feed, which is double the amount stated for me and the dogs.
For Croppy I will start him on the Global Herbs Movefree Plus supplement with Devils Claw as he has arthritis, but when things improve my may put him on the same as Casper for a while to see which provides him with the best effect.

Zipvit website: www.zipvit.co.uk The product is called Genie Glucosamine & Chrondroitin Liquid. These codes are in my latest book, but may show on the website. I normally just phone my order through. (A217c 4 x 360ml bottles - £29.85 Mixed fruit flavour) I buy a lot of supplements from Zipvit and find them very good and reasonably priced. LincsLass

Thanks for the link LincsLass, that's the cheapest I've found for Vit E capsules (for my horse) and Glucosamine (for me). Ta!

Yes thanks a lot. Now soooo confused trying to work out dosage/costs of various products for us & the dogs! How do you know the recommended dose for the horses please? Sorry if I'm being dim - & the vet did say he would look up for horses & dogs if I bought the stuff and gave him the strengths. But it's def time me & dogs started on something, and horses tub is nearly finished, so will have to decide between tabs/liquid (which only last 18dys per bottle for one serving?)/ powder - with/without flavour!!!

Horses need 10,000mg (10g) per day of Glucosamine, not sure about dogs. For humans 1500mg is considered high strength.

I have two small ponies who have 2 capfuls of liquid twice a day in their anti-lam and I have found this to be enough and Casper has shown a great improvement and the stiffness greatly reduced. A friend of mine has a Dutch Warmblood and she gives her mare 3 capfuls twice a day. As for the dogs I have Border Collies and they have one capful a day in their feed. If you go on the zipvit website you can ask questions for free and they will be able to give the correct dosage for your size pet/horse.
