just interested really, not being personal, but I can't see myself still mucking out when I'm in my sixties lol!!!
I think it would be lovely for the elderly to still be doing their own horses after years of trudging through muddy fields and getting up at the crack of dawn in all weathers to feed and turn out.
Do these people exsist?

I knew an elderly lady who had a little pony that she had all her adult life. She had this little chap until he was 38 years old. She spent all her time seeing to him day and night - never allowing anyone else to give her time off or holidays etc, I remember the day that they had to let him go and everyone on the yard - especially all the youngsters wept seeing what she had to go through. I wonder what she does with her time now !?

My old riding instructor was still teaching well into her eighties (had to have a bit of help moving jumps about but she still taught very well and actively. She was even talking about getting herself a little highland type to potter about on last time I spoke to her...she's still got the riding school as far as I know

I know quite a few people in the 60s, 70s and 80s still actively involved with horses and some of the older ones still ride to hounds! One friend recently stopped schooling her young racehorses over jumps when she was 73 and stopped galloping them at 74. Sadly, I'm not one of them and have had to give up horse ownership for a mixture of financial and health reasons.

I have a friend that is 65 and has her own horse that she still competes with in showjumping, dressage and local shows. She goes up to her paddocks twice a day, mucks out, grooms and rides out at least every other day!! Whatever the weather she is there regardless! I just wish I had her energy and truely hope I am still as active as her when I get to her age!!

When I was in my late 20s/early30s I remember saying to a friend that I hoped I would still be riding when I was her age (she was 40 at the time and not impressed) ;D Well I am 46 now, soon to be 47. Ride as often as I can and have two horses. I know that's not exactly a record, but I try not to think about my age. Anyway all the exercise associated with keeping horses helps to keep you fit doesn't it? Funny - only the other day when I was hacking out with a friend, I explained to her that, when I'm riding, still feel like I'm 25 I don't think you age "in your head", but in your body instead, eg. wrinkles LOL!!

well, i'm only 14, but my old friend emily and I decided that we would both like to be riding on our hundredth birthdays!! my riding instructor vicky is 44, and her riding instructor (vicky is the best, so you can imagine how good her instructor is!) is 81!! she doesn't ride that much now, but she does a lot to do with horses, and when she gave vicky a lesson on her 17hh sports horse x thoroughbred jake, she said "i remember this horse, i was there when they backed him!" and shoved vicky off and got on herself! from the ground, without a leg up! i want to be like her at her age!! then she was cantering jake round in circles with no hands, to show this point to vicky. i haven't met her, but she sounds amazing!!

Theres a gent in our hunt who is either 82 or 83 and he hunted twice a week up to 3 years ago and hacked out every day in between. Even now although Ive not seen him hunt this season, he still hacks out and attends the meet on foot and in his car.

Yeah but her maj doesn't have to do anything but get on and ride round a bit. She isn't out there in all weathers lifting barrows of poo!! I intend to ride for another 20 years, until Thor is 30, then we can gracefully retire together. (Have to start riding him yet though)

When I'm old I want to ride still. Just happy hacking - nothing strenuous but I don't know if I'd be able to afford it on a apension... Maybe I'll have kids by then who will have horses to lend me!
I've gota long standing bet with mum that she can still get on a horse and walk trot canter at the age of 70. I don't think she will!

If this woman is who I think it is Mobismum have seen her at local shows too.
My Mum knew someone who still hunted at 90 years of age, in fact she died on the hunting field, came down at a fence and horse landed on her. She always rode sidesaddle too. What a woman

I just break my babies now as they cant take much riding and I cant give it. I am going to be one of those old farts thats into driving, yes, that will be my love when I cant ride anymore. oh my god Beckie, that's amazing! a lady of 81 still mounting from the ground!! I can't do that now at 37!!
These horse owners are an inspiration to us and I will think of them next time I am feeling worn out and saying to myself " I'm getting too old for this!"
