This may sound bizarre but...
A girl I know has an Arab mare with a tail so long that it touched the ground and she regularly trod on it when she stepped back (the mare not the girl)
So she trimmed it, not a straight bang, she was quite good with the scissors and made it look like a switch.
Her instructor then gave her merry hell saying that you should never cut or pull and Arabs tail.
I thought she did the right thing by trimming it.
What do you think?

Well i'm not to sure if your supposed to cut them or not...but surely cutting it is better then the horse standing on it?

Err............is there some Big Nazi out there telling us all what to do!?!? It's HER horse, she can cut/trim it's tail if she wants to!!
Lots of people with Arabs "tidy up" their manes and tails. Long flowing tails are beautiful to look at but I agree that it should not be so long that the poor horse stands on it, very dangerous.

ok the rule book states that manes and tail should be left natural, but what lenght of tail would a wild horse have after it had dragged it through a few bushes. I worked on a top show yard and we did tidy up there tails, it should be trimmedat about fetlock level. If we wanted a really long tail left it would be baby oil and taped up with a few strands of twine(false tail for flys) hanging down but this needs redoing every couple of days to prevent the hair from been damaged.

if the horse keeps treading on it eventually it will become sparse as it will get pulled out as the horse moves about.

I've got to trim my girls as it is dragging on the floor and is just a mess.

if the horse is shown in hand or undersaddle then the correct thing is to remove bits of the bottom so it still looks natural ;-) otherwise , if the mare is not shown do what ever you like. my arab has a very short mane and forelock cos otherwise she headtosses when riding as it annoys her and my other aRAB MARE HAS A VERY SHORT BOBED TAIL SO IT DOESNT FLICK ROUND HER HINDLEGS MAKING THEM WET ALL THE TIME AND SO CAUSING MUD FEVER. THEY LOOK A TAD UNARABY BUT ARE VERY HAPPY AND SO AM i AND THATS ALL THAT MATTERS. oops caps lock on sorry.

In the summer I leave both my Arabs tails longer for the flies I just tidy them gently at the ends and feather them aswell. In the winter I don't want them dragging in the mud so I have just cut about 8 inches off Storms tail and feathered it alot as well it looks good it also had a wash!!!! I leave their manes long and just tidy them as and when.

I've also been told to give mine a longer bridlepath as her long mane goes over her head and annoys her when working!
