Ive stayed on many rears and bucks bareback. Like mags&dan it sounds like, I learnt it on naughty ponies as a child!

lol i used to ride a naughty little pony bb called sunny when i was younger. propper naughty little pony who used to give you that look!! you know the look lol! xxx stupid or not, as people have said on here you should have a good seat and be able to sit to a buck or rear if you dont have a good seat bb you shouldnt bother going out, but learn in an enclosed space or field and build up that bond with youre horse.

The only thing that could hurt are your seat bones digging into the horse's back but you can control how much pressure there is in your seat bones. Try it in a chair first sitting on your hands (might be easier to do this one side at a time). You can put lots of weight into your seat bones and make them fell like stillettos or you can pull them up a little and surround them with muscle and make them into trainers. Thre trainers are obviously more comfortable for the horse but you can use the stillettos to get his attention if necessary!

Question is .... why ride bareback regularly when you presumably you have a saddle and there are no other reasons not to???

answer is my horse and i like it. and i like to feel how the horse moves and it makes a change from being saddled up. i like variety when working my horses so they dont get bored and we like to have a good time [me and my horse]. the question was " does riding bb hurt youre horse?" and i just wanted to know if it did and what other people thought re riding bb=pain?. i am well aware of the dangers and as i said wouldnt take stupid risks. thankyou for replying though certanly has bought some other issues up hasnt it?

Oh I have ridden bareback and I like it Yes it will improve your seat and balance. However, if I want to ride bareback to improve these techniques, I would do it in a safe and contolled enviornment and def not on the road. If I'm doing it for these reasons, I would also only do it in varied and measured spells. I dont know for sure if it hurts the horse or not ... I'm guessing it would depend on the fitness of the horse, i.e. how much muscle he has etc ... ability of rider, i.e. not bouncing etc .... and if not done for prolonged periods then its good to go.

lol xxx you need to chill sometimes. Actually i have fallen off bareback as well as ridden. im afriad we will have to agree to disagree here as IMo if you havnt enough control to stop your horse even without saddle you shouldnt be on the roads full stop. If you horse is always spooky and shooting about you DEFINATELY shouldnt be on the roads for yours and others safety

Taken directly from the Highway Code:
"37: Before you take a horse on to a road, you should
ensure all tack fits well and is in good condition make sure you can control the horse. Always ride with other, less nervous horses if you think that your horse will be nervous of traffic. Never ride a horse without a saddle or bridle"
I ride Floyd a fair bit bareback in the school and I find lateral work so much easier as he can feel very subtle weight changes. Mind you, I only school him for about 20 mins bareback. I school without a bridle too!
As Richard Maxwell once said "take away the equipment and you're left with the truth" .....
An unbalanced, heavy rider will cause back pain etc whether he/she sits on a saddle or bareback but the saddle does offer some protection. It's not just the back though, unbalanced riders will rely on their reins too much as well.
I personally think a bit of bareback riding is very good for you! As long as you listen to your horse - they will soon tell you if you're making them uncomfortable.
I give Floyd's back a quick massage when I've finished a bareback schooling session. As I say, I find lateral work much easier without a saddle.

as long as you dont sit to far back because other wise the back insnt supported enough the further back u go cos there are less or smaller ribs there. i ride bare back alot and feel like me and aingeal have a connection more than with tack between us i tend to ride her down and around the fields just in our headcollar and shes as good as gold ! love her! it helps us to bond and she feels like a great big sofa too! big bum
