For sale?? Its not for me, lol! I have too many as it is!!! A friend of mine wants a huge drafthorse (bit like Berties ) and she has scoured the country looking, and so far found nothing! Is it better to look abraod? She looked at a Percheron Stallion (now advertised on Horsemart, lol!) but the lady failed to tell her it had no breed papers (um, so why is it still entire...?) until she got there! She isn't so worried about breed papers exactly, just is a bit fussy about paperwork being correct (ie horse isn't stolen) etc. Anyone got any ideas?

Does she want a Breton... or just any type of draft horse? What job does she want it to do? Theres a rather nice Norman Cob on Horsequest - I've copied the text, but can't manage the picture.

Zoe, does your friend want a draft horse to ride immediately or a baby to raise at home first? I've just rescued two percheron x comtois babies who were going to be sold for meat :-( There are hundreds of these for sale in France and unbroken youngsters going for well under 1000 GBP. You'd then be looking at max 500 GBP to bring over to the UK.

Does your friend know how different ID's are? Just I've been riding all my life (I'm 32 now) and thought I knew a thing or two, I've brought on & exercised young horses for a living & retrained TB's, I've worked in polo, racing and eventing yards . I'm not saying anything against ID's but I've got a young full ID and I'm a bit out horsed. They have been known to be tanks and mature late.

I would go across the water, because you get a far better selection... I have a number of friends that have recently purchased the French Comtois and went to a particular breeder in France, who is a very nice family man in a family run business producing lovely horses, and will match you accordingly dependant upon what you want to do. He wouldn't sell you a horse that isn't suitable for the job you need it.

ID's are very different to other draught horses, they are not actually draught horses and were 'designed' to be a kind of working sports horse. Consequently they can have rather more whizz than you always desire with a whole lot of muscle to back it up (in my experience)!
I don't know much about the real heavy horse breeds, but have a friend with a Percheron who is truely lovely. It does sound like your friend would have a better selection to choose from on the continent, and it is pretty easy to bring them back.
