Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigour; and those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent; her eager body begins to quiver. Suddently she breaks from the group, flying over the green grass faster and faster. You have been spotted and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands caress her beloved head and you look one more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together..............

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.
I whinied to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here".
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached out to me.
I was with you at the shops today, your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my nose on you, I smiled and said "It's me".
You looked so very tired and sank into your chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away".
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...in the
stillness of the evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over..I smile and watch you yawning
and say "goodnight, God bless, I'ss see you in the morning".
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out...then come home to be with me.
AND
If it should be
If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done
For this last battle, can't be won
You will be sad I understand
Dont let your grief then stay your hand
For this day, more than all the rest
Your love and friendship stand the test
Weve had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no fears
When the time comes, please let me go
Take me where my needs they`ll tend
Only stay with me until the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see
I know in time that you will see
It is a kindness that you do for me
Although my tail its last has waved
From pain and suffering I`ve been saved
Dont grieve that it should be you
who has to decide this deed to do
Weve been so close- we two these years
Dont let your heart hold any tears.

This one was on this board before. Helped me alot.
For a very special mare, our foundation mare and teacher.
I'll lend you for a little while, a foal of mine God said,
for you to love while he's alive and mourn for when he's dead.
It maybe one or thirty years or maybe more than these,
but will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charm to gladden you, and should his stay be brief,
you shall have his memories, as solace for your grief. I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
but there are lessons taught down here, I want this foal to learn.
I've looked this wide world over, in my search for teachers true,
and from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labour vain,
nor hate me when I come to call, and take him back again?
Will you shelter him with tenderness and love him while you may,
and for the happiness you've known, forever grateful stay.
But should the angels call for him much sooner than you planned,
brave the bitter grief that comes and please try to understand......

The original is on www.rainbowbridge.com
There is also Don't Cry For The Horses
Don't cry for the horses that life has set free,
A million white horses forever to be
Don't cry for the horses now in God's hand
As they dance and they prance in a heavenly band
They were ours as a gift, but never to keep
As they close their eyes forever to sleep
Their spirits unbound. On silver wings they fly
A million white horses against the blue sky
Look up into heaven, you'll see them above -
The horses we lost, the horses we loved
Manes and tails flowing, they gallop through time
They were never yours, they were never mine
Don't cry for the horses, they'll be back someday
When our time is gone, they will show us the way
Do you hear that soft nicker? Close to your ear?
Don't cry for the horses, love the ones that are here
Don't cry for the horses, lift up your sad eyes
Can't you see them as they fly by?
A million white horses, free from hunger and pain
Their spirits set free until we ride again.

The following short poem was on a card given to me when I lost a horse a few years ago, the picture is of a man riding a grey horse with a foal at foot, a dog alongside and a bird on his arm, so this for Syd 'Sheraton Blue' 17/3/96 - 1/5/97
Five children of the desert
Roaming th drifting sand.
At gentle pace, belying speed
Where cool waters meet the land.
Of storm and scorching ray
Nomads proud bound by time,
Passing on their way.

Dedicated to the only ones l`ve ever had to say goodbye to, Saffy 1980-1988 and Coco 1992-1997, missing you ladies.
Dreams
You touch a dream, you know it`s there
like elusive waves of wind-tossed air,
Your mind is clear, your heart is light
A moment`s bliss before it`s flight.
The years pass by but the dream will stay
As swallows nest, then fly away.
Yout equine friends they come and go
But in stall and meadow you`ll always know
As Mayflies dance on a silent stream
You can bide awhile and hold your dream.

This is such a lovely thread, I had never heard of rainbow bridge before but it has really touched my heart (and made me cry at work). So sorry to hear about little Smolka, here is one of my favourite poems about the loss of such a dear friend, by P Benson, called 'The End'.
Gentle caress of a muzzle,
Soft little whimpering neigh,
Stronger than words ot awaken
Memory's wondrous array.
Measures can fathom the ocean,
Reckon the swiftness of light:
Where is the standard for sorrow?
Where is the standard for right?
Where is the meter of sadness
Gauging the grief of good-bye
Bid to a favourite hunter?
What is the depth of a sigh?
Standards of measure are futile,
Vain is the effort to tell;
Only the one who has felt it
Plumbs the full depth of farewell.
One loving pat in the stable,
One little catch at the heart,
One little sorrowing silent
Kiss of two spirits that part.

Shadow, died in his field in his mid thirties. Miss you Shad. So much.
And Fluff, my first cat, picked her myself aged two and held her as she left for Rainbow Bridge 15 years later. Still miss her another 13 years on.
Finally, Kim, the dog no-one wanted, my friend for 11 years till his kidneys failed last year. There's a cold spot at the foot of my bed now.

To Cashew. Our beautiful cat who was put to sleep on the 19th July 2002. Your eight years with us was too short but we are thankful that your pain at the end was brief and that you are now in peace. We are so very grateful that you found happiness at last with us.
Also to the other cats who have shared their lives with us. Suzie, Blackie, Tardy, Phuurst, Lottee, Magic and Amos (wherever you are). You are all remembered with such love.

I just spoke to my sis in New Zealand. Her old boxer dog Cooper will be arriving at Rainbow Bridge in a few hours. V.v sad, but at least he will be in no more pain.
Hey Hank, he'll be up for a game of chase n nip now! No heavy aching tired body to weigh him down.
Taken me about two hours but I have finally controlled the tears enough to identify the letters on the keyboard!
What a day to discover this thread!
Love to you all in RB

Its at times like this I actually wish that there is the complete opposite to Rainbow Bridge waiting for whoever murdered them.
We never knew you girls but God Bless and Rest In Peace

In memory of Jake, a faithful friend, left us 19/8/02 on his way to Rainbow Bridge to join his best friend Bruno who passed away on 12/11/01, the thought of you two together again eases our pain, sweet dreams boys.

I also have a favourite Mary Lascelles poem.

Standards of measure are futile,
Vain is the effort to tell;
Only the one who has felt it
Plumbs the full depth of farewell.
One loving pat in the stable,
One little catch at the heart,
One little sorrowing silent
Kiss of two spirits that part.
