Jennifer, the war memorial is very recent--when I was in Duxford they were asking for contributions so thinking about it I'm not sure whether the actual installation has been built or finished yet....so you're probably right, it would have been a later edition of the Jilly Cooper book (so I suppose I've got no reason not to read it now ). She was definately involved in some way or another tho. Lol, Francis. Michael Morpurgo is absolutely amazing. Kensuke's Kingdom is in all honesty one of the best things I've ever read--I defy anybody to remain dry eyed at the end of that. Ditto Kevin Crossley-Holland's Arthur trilogy, which everyone should rush out and buy immediately

Francis, I must try to find War Horse, thank you for info. I know the poster you mention - apparently it's suffered criticism for being over sentimental, but when you read soldiers' accounts of their experiences you find it is by no means so. Many soldiers cherished "their" horses, some putting themselves in peril for their sake.
I think Spirit was on TV over Christmas but I didn't see it...........reading your reports that's probably just as well !!! I did cry at Bambi too, but I was only a little gir at the time and haven't seen it since.

Michael Morpurgo`s "War Horse" is a fantastic book, said to be "The Black Beauty of World War 1 ".
My OH bought me Jilly Cooper`s "Animals at War" LAST Christmas but I haven`t braved it yet. Not about horses, but Robert Westall`s "Blitz Cat" is also a good WW2 animal story.

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (I think is it's full title!) was on over xmas on BBC1, followed by Black Beauty on ITV3 in the afternoon, and then I went to see Narnia in the evening. Jeez, nearly ran out of kleenex!!!! Too much sadness in one day
