No, I wouldn't ride a 2 year old arab or any other type of horse - much too young, let them have and enjoy their childhood and grow up a bit!

They say because he was hand reared that he is very 'in your face' and will walk all over you, and this is why he has been backed. Personally, I think their work should be on the ground first before attempting to ride, but I suppose its all down to a quick turn over. The breeder sold him now he's being sold again. The breeder had my mare on loan and unfortunately she rejected him so things didnt work out for the stud from the start.

My sister was shocked to find that in the USA once a youngster has lost its foal tail it is treated as an adult horse. Morgans are broken at 2 and in the ring at 3 and even driven in the ring at 2.
In fact my horse had been backed and also "hitched" when I bought him at 18 months old. I said when I had him I would turn him out in the field and do nothing with him!

No way! I backed my Arab in at 3 years and 8 months and so far i've only walked her, we've trotted twice not even a minute long. She's 4 in January and I'm turning her away now till the spring where I will restart her but slowly! She will still be out 24/7 with a mixed herd learning the ways of a horse plus the ways of being ridden!! At two years of age I hadn't even put a saddle on her back! I led her on the roads and in the school learning voice comands but never rushed her! heres a pic of the first time I ever got on her at 3 years and 8 months. She let me ride her straight away with no one at her side and on her 4th time being ridden we were hacking with another horse for company. She was so relaxed I knew that all the waiting had paid off! (bought her as yearling!!) first time hacking!

Arabmare: Yeah I think sometimes if you wait a little bit the horse learns more and is easier to work with when they are a little older.
Anon: What do you have against arabs? If it is because they are spooky? I didn't like that at first either, but I got over it with my arab. If I can get over a spooky horse than anyone can because I am no lionheart.

Don't start me on this! I want to leave the yard I'm at as new liveries keep coming, all with younger and younger horses they want to ride straight away. Yesterday 3 yearlings arrived who will be ridden by the time they're two! I'd just managed to convince the owner of a 3 years old that she should take it easy and now she's just left. I haven't welcomed the new ones as I'm bound to make some remarks and now they probably think I'm rude!
My youngster Spirit is a Paint Horse (half Quarter Horse) and will be 3 next spring. I will not sit on him until he's 4 but will be doing long lining and free schooling with him soon. Most of the horses the same breed are already in hard work at his age.
