I have a 16.2 Irish draught gelding who up till now has always loaded more or less straightaway, he might pause at the ramp but normally if someone goes behind then he goes in, but now for some reason (he hasn't had a bad journey) he doesn't seem to want to put his feet on the ramp. It took me 40 mins to get him in on the homeward journey. I'm using a dually halter, but I'm having trouble getting him to go forward, if I stand in the Lorry facing him (but not looking at him ) and ask him to come forward he backs up and just ignores the pressure, I try not to keep the pressure on for too long. When I lead him the conventional way I walk positively but as soon as he gets close to the Lorry he starts to slow down and sometimes plants his feet, I get him off balance to move his feet this works for a while but he keeps stopping. I'm going to start feeding him at the base of the ramp and then hopefully get him to stand on the ramp and feed him so he associates it with his feed. Does any one have any other suggestions.

Firstly, get the ramp and floor checked for structural integrity as well as a general check over (eg. tyre pressures etc). Horses usually have self preservation so if he can feel something's not right then that could be the cause.
Secondly, do groundwork with him away from the box. You say that you don't keep the pressure on him for too long which is essentially rewarding him for going backwards. He needs to learn that the way to release the pressure is to move forward so you need to brush up on your technique with this. Pressure is the question, releasing it is the reward for them answering the question.

Hi Agree with all clipclop, check out your ramp, they sense more than us years ago when I used to ride, my mare Zulu wouldn't go forward once and it was because there was marshy land, she would have sank, I couldn't see it but she could sense it luckly for me I listerned to her and didn't make her go forward.
also agree with clip clop about Pressure and releasing and with ground work
go back to ground work get him to go over tarp, carpet, backing up in L shape, you name it, every idea you can think of you know to have plenty of light in the box, side door open and plenty of hay and food make it a nice place to go in, not dark and scary
when you start going back to loading, don't ask him to go forwards, lots of backing up, so your not asking to go forwards, your asking him not to go in there, then start asking him to go forwards
I am not very good with writing and explaining if your still having problems contact IH office and get someone out to see whats happening with your chap
