i think they need to have started turning red before they will fully ripen on the windowsill. I would think you have a better chance with newspaper wrapped ones in a dark place but check every so often in case one goes bad and sends the lot off. Green tomato chutney is lovely!

Ha ha, yes that is the only problem with making chutney and jam. We ended up having to buy jars and lids out of desperation last year. We have made spiced plum jam, plum and ginger jam, and cucumber pickle so far this year. We have also got a load of pears which we bottle in brandy. Last year we bought several bags of satsumas from Tesco at 1p a bag. They were just about to shut and were desperate to get rid of them. They made fantastic marmalade too!

Ours are still turning from green to red but I live further south than you... My husband was giving them beer to drink the other week, not sure why! He says they are delicious (I'm not keen on tomatoes) so I hope you manage to taste at least one

I have at last finished harvesting my tomatoes and have pulled all the plants out. Once they started to ripen, they were all ripe within a couple of weeks. I found they ripened better on the windowsill once they had started to turn. You will be making soup and chutney soon Liz!

Beer flavoured tomatoes? Sounds interesting. I have eaten three of my tomatoes now and I have to say that they were GORGEOUS. What flavour. Sad to say none of their green neighbours seem to think that turning red is a good idea at all and have decided to remain determindly green. Oh well, back to the chutney idea! I'll resurrect my mini greenhouse for next summer.

Sophy, can you use them for soups and stews then? Even if they're green?

Liz, I have never tried cooking with green tomatoes so I have no idea I am afraid.

Just google for green tomato chutney, or other recipes. The BBC Good Food Guide normally has some nice recipes! x
