How someone trace a persons family after their death?
Basically I am adopted within the family, my birth father died in a holiday car crash a year after I was born. It's only recently that I learnt his name. He was Scottish. I know the area and even the address, but would kind of like to track them down... Would this be fair? Would his parents still be alive?

Definitely go for it, Julz. No idea how you'd go about it - advert in local paper, with box number? But well worth doing, if you can.
I finally found some cousins whom I knew about but had never met (long story, family feud in the 1930's!) and it turned out that they'd been vaguely looking for me at the same time. They were lovely, and it was magical to meet them and share memories. But they were pretty elderly, and sadly two of them died within the next three years, so I'd almost left it too late. I wouldn't have missed meeting them for the world, though. One of the best things I've ever done, filled in great chunks of my life. Go for it, and good luck.

Hi Julz. I'm adopted too. I wanted to see if I could try and find my birth mother so I went to see a solicitor, and he put an advert in a newspaper local to where I thought my mother might be living. Along the lines of '...anybody knowing the last known whereabouts of xxxxx..', it worked and within a month we'd met each other. You could do the same.....'seeking the relatives of xxxxx'...... You probably needn't use a solicitor if you didn't want to, you could do it yourself. Hope this helps, wishing you luck and strength with your search, I know what it's like. x

Hi Julz I do a lot of family tree stuff and have been helping a family friend trace their blood family recently. It can be done I'd suggest you start by heading to a site like www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk which holds lots of online data about births, deaths and marriages (you'll need to buy some credits but its not expensive and is pay as you go). By working back from his death year you can find his date of birth and who his parents were and then you can see if they are still alive to. You can also order your father's death certificate from www.gro.gov.uk if you can find the index number and that may have his parents name on it if they were next of kin. Hope that helps a bit. Good luck on your search xx

I'm adopted too and I found my birth mother by registering on a government website - look up The Adoption Contact Register.
