Ok so I'm never going to be able to take a year out to go travelling because my animals are too important to me but i still want to see the world without getting bogged down by the touristy bits!
My Oh and I have booked 2 weeks off in September with the promise of going somewhere nice but I'm coming to you lovely people to see if you have any recommendations.
Our budget is 2k including food money and looking for a 10 day holiday... I'm toying between somewhere exotic (and last minute) to be all inclusive or go for a more exploratory holiday where we maybe travel and stay in whatever hotel we can find on any given day...
All suggestions welcome

Morocco stay away from the coast resorts as they are crapola! Make your way into Marakesch and go from there.........things to in the city..........main square by day or night (when it really comes alive) stay in oneof the little private hotels, (quite cheap and very comfortable) hire yourself a driver and a jeep and go out into the desert and spend a night under canvas, believe me its epic then climb Jebel Saro to see the sunrise, go to the Rose Valley (yes roses growing in the middle of the sdesert) have a traditional bedouin evening and hire a local guide to take you round the souk and spice market.............believe me its a fantastic place to go and visit and once you've been I defy you not to want to go back! Forgot to add Wadi Bashing in said landrover (driving along dry river beds at speed your OH will love that)

It's funny you say that Christine, because my Oh did Morocco on his motorbike with his brothers the year before last and said he definitely wouldn't want to go back!! He must have gone to the wrong bits :-) x

If you don't want to be bogged down by the touristy bits then I would think all-inclusive should be off the list....

If it were me and my fella, we'd be heading north..... Norway, fjords, mountains, Northern Lights and so on. Always wanted to go there.

If you don't want to be bogged down by the touristy bits then I would think all-inclusive should be off the list.... The all inclusive is my back up plan (as long as it's somewhere nice) for the simple reason that we can't physically afford anymore and I don't know how expensive anywhere is once we've arrived.

Portia two places in the world have my heart (or a bit of it anyways) one is Morocco and the other is the Masai Mara in Africa.......I spent 6 weeks in the Masai Mara and it wasn't enough.........a lifetime wouldn't be enough for that place! When I left I was given a bracelet made from the tail hairs of elephants ( the tribespeople collect the discarded hairs) as a token 'for my return one day' I'm still planning that trip.........I've been lucky over the years to goto some places that the tourist doesn;t normally get to go........Siberia to see the wild tigers....being within a hands touch of wild tiger at a watering hole was scarey but good, Russia was another great trip........Moscow.......St Basils has to be seen to be believed and not jsut for the 'candyfloss' outside inside is breathtaking....... had to laugh went to see Lenins tomb in the Kremlin, he was in a glass coffin, (bit Snow white ) and you had to file in and be silent and respectful, Ems whispered to me ' mum Lenins ear has fallen off' hustled her and me out double quick and told the attenddant what had happened, the place got closed down while morticians were called to fix it, cue Ems and me in fits of giggles leaning on the Kremlin walls and hoping the KGB didn't come and drag us off somewhere for being 'disrepectful' .........happy days
