My daughter-in-law is running in the London Marathon this year to raise money for Mind. The poor girl is training like mad and doing really well. She is doing 20+ mile runs so should be able to complete the course. No mean feat as she works full time as well. She is struggling to raise all the money she needs though. She has tried a lot of companies and is having a quiz night soon and has a Virgin donating page. I had no idea that you have to commit to raise so much money! (About £1500 I think). If she does not raise it all, she will have to pay it herself! I know a lot of people on here have or know people with mental health issues and just wonder if anyone would like to sponsor her for such a worthy cause? Her page is uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JoanneChesney Thanks everyone for reading this far

Am I understanding this correctly. She has had to commit to raising a certain amount of money in order to enter the London marathon?

She could only get a place by being asked by a charity to run for them. Part of this was to agree to raise at least £1,500 for them. I couldn't believe it myself but apparently this is the case. Anybody else had any experience of this?

That's one way of limiting the numbers!

A man from where I work is also running to raise money for MIND - and he's going as a red public telephone box!

The London Marathon must be quite an even to organise and manage so Im assuming they have to keep numbers down some how, imagine if it was just open for everyone - chaos . I am close to people who have mental health issues, I will gladly donate & wish her well.

The London Marathon is so ridiculously over-subscribed that for many of your average runners (I.e. Not your elites or semi-pro) that a charity place with a fundraising limit like this is often the only way they will get a place and achieve that goal. I applied to the normal ballot twice and was rejected so a charity place was my only option.
Good luck to your daughter-in-law. I know how hard it is to train hard and work full-time. If she gets the marathon bug, tell her to go and do the Edinburgh race. I absolutely loved it - preferred it to London!

That is interesting Solly, I will tell her to look out for him although there are so many people running that even dressing as a telephone box doesn't make you stand out enough to be sure of being seen! Thanks you so much Wills, she will be very grateful I know. She really has tried hard to get sponsorship from work and other places but they are not being supportive these days sadly. Her friends and family are her main source of help so far.

Thanks Arabiangem, I will tell her that. She has also tried for two years to get a place even after asking the charities!

Thank you for your donation Wills, it was very kind of you and much appreciated. We also have members of our family with mental health issues so appreciate the work Mind is doing. Thanks again, I will let you all know how she does!

Just in case anyone manages to spot her, her number is 55127 by the way! Just makes you realise how many people are running. This time tomorrow it will all be over.........
