Can anyone work this out? I have underactive thyroid but i have symptoms of overactive thyroid. I was sent to a specialist guy who just told me i was wasting his time and sent me home, that was years ago now and i have regularly taken my levothyroxine for few years with tests to check its still fine which apparently it is. My aneamia is once again gone as my bloods came back fine two weeks ago.
hyperactivity mood swings such as anxiety, irritability and nervousness difficulty sleeping (insomnia) feeling tired ALL the time (fatigue) muscle weakness needing to pass stools or urine frequently diarrhoea ( i think my frequent need to pee is mostly the nerve damage in my back though) sensitivity to heat and excess sweating unexplained or unexpected weight loss, despite having an increased appetite (though in a small number of cases the increase in appetite can lead to weight gain) Mines the weight gain. very infrequent or light periods, or periods stopping altogether Mine are now more regular but still weird. A swelling in your neck caused by an enlarged thyroid gland (goitre) Dont think i have this mind you although tonsils always big??. irregular and/or unusually fast heart rate (mega fast at moment) a tremor (trembling or shaking) warm, moist skin redness on the palms of your hands loosening of your nails in their nail beds (Dont have this eeeeek) itchy skin with raised itchy swellings (urticaria) patchy hair loss (alopecia) thin hair but not bald twitching in your face and limbs The next lot is what im treated for Levothyroxine for Underactive thyroid tiredness being sensitive to cold weight gain constipation depression slow movements and thoughts muscle aches and weakness muscle cramps dry and scaly skin brittle hair and nails loss of libido pain, numbness and a tingling sensation in the hand and fingers (carpal tunnel syndrome) irregular or heavy periods
a low-pitched and hoarse voice a puffy-looking face thinned or partly missing eyebrows a slow heart rate hearing loss anaemia I have a lot of these symptoms aswell
I was told i have fibro by the retired part time dr but nothing ever been mentioned since. I have hypermobility also. I missed dr appointment today so need to make another as my hear been racing and i feel very dizzy and have been throwing up (not food but is it bile i guess)
Thanks for anyone who read through this.

Everybodies thyroid rate varies slightly but generally falls within a range. I'm guessing that unmedicated your levels were felt to be low so you take medication, this would then give your thyroid a bit of oomph, maybe your medication is a little too much for you now and you are getting the signs and syptoms of an overactive thyroid. The problem isn't always a lifelong condition, my husband had an overactive thyroid many years ago and was given tablets but after a while they were stopped as he no longer needed them, he originally had most of the syptoms on the list but not all.

You're being greedy now wanting all the symptoms lol.
Are there any groups or forums for thyroid sufferers? Sometimes people withthe problems know as much as the Dr's and may be able to make a few suggestions. It really does sound crappy, I remember when my OH was ill, he was lucky if he got 3-4hrs sleep a night and had so many nasty symptoms, he lost so mush weight he looked like someone from a concentration camp. I hope you are able to get some sensible advice.

I have an underactive thyroid and from what I can gather when they test you for it via blood they work within a 30% band. I had a discussion with the doctor and raised my concerns that 'if' they work within this 30% band then 'if' you dont fall into the 'norm' you can be nearly a third out, which to me is not on.
I had itchy skin, fell asleep each and every time I sat down, would fall out with my own shadow, weight gain, brain felt as though I was trying to think through cotton wool, memory non existant and my eyes were really dry, so much so that I knew when I was blinking.
Had thyroxine, E45 stop itch cream, drops for my eyes and after dozens of trips to doctor for blood tests where nothing else showed up I was sent to a specialist and what she told me was that your weight has got to be considered when they are giving you thyroxine and be in the right proportions. Since all this I have been fine each year after blood tests.
Nothing else showed up in the numerous tests I had, so It was all down to the underactive thyroid. It took quite a few months to feel any better once the dosage was correct, but now I no longer need the eye drops and only occassionally do need the E45 cream. Just to add I NEVER forget to take my thyroxine, do not want to feel like that ever again.
Hang in there troop an underactive thyroid makes you feel like sh!te.
Will just add when I originally went to doctors they said mine was over and under active and thats why I left it for another 2 years as I knew that was impossible, it had got to be one or the other and CANNOT be both, not imho anyway.
Forgot to add when at specialist was tested for Graves desease as well as it is fairly common with thyroid probs. Have you had this test?

Doctors do have a tendancy to go with the average not the person. We've got similar with my daughter, she's 37 weeks pregnant and her blood pressure is up quite a bit but because it hasn't reached their magical figure it's not considered a problem but her BP is normally low so the actual change is quite large.
