Couldn't really let this pony go unmourned. Naughty chap, was a great mate to my horse for 10 years, friendly, easy to catch, whinny in the morning/evening (food!) never tried to kick or misbehave, so long as no one tried to ride him!
All summer I kept looking at him and thought he didn't look so well as usual, nothing specific, but not just "right." Fell ill a couple of weeks ago and vet would have PTS straight away, but we kept him going for a bit. Blood tests were v. bad, so it was decided that it was time to say goodbye as he had three things wrong with him. Poor lad, managed to get him pain free for the last couple of days and he went quietly with a mouthful of grass.
He would come and look hopefully through my kitchen window in the evenings when it was time for tea. My best memory of him is letting him go at the gate and seeing him belting across the field as fast as his little hairy legs would go, and have a buck and a kick before settling down to eat. I hope he is doing the same over Rainbow Bridge.
