Hows he doing? When Lexi's tummy was bad, i.e. IBD, chicken used to turn her on like a tap as she was allergic to the type of protein in it. Just a thought and one which I know you will not like much if that is the only way to get pills down.

No he's fine with chicken thankfully, which is odd, because he's not ok with duck!!! He's finished antibiotics tomorrow so we will see then how long the infection stays away.. But for now he's ok... The drugs for dementia are so fantastic, even behaviours that he's formed habits around, like barking in the car, have even stopped haha and he's been doing that YEARS!! But one of the ways the drugs work is to halt cycle pattern behaviours.. So while it's stopped the -i need to go out to pee every 20 mins, when actually he just goes out turns around and comes back in (but you can't not let him out) (now it's normal-every 1-2 hours!!), or when he goes for a drink of water and forgets to stop drinking till he gets sick or you physically stop him (no longer does this), or stands in front of me barking at me non stop all night long (also stopped).... The tablets would probably be a good short term treatment for things like tail chasing etc, if it's worked for his barking habits too to help break a habit... Tho maybe if he has had this chemical imbalance for a few years maybe I just assumed it was bad manners and blamed my partner for letting it get to that stage-oops!
On the tummy front though he's perfect! I can't believe his stomach has coped with 3 weeks of antibiotics plus double steroids and the new tablets as well... But after the last upset stomach I gave him natural yoghurt for about 10 days so that must have helped break a cycle..
However none of it will matter if he cannot cope without the antibiotics because 3 weeks has only just about cleared the infection, so long term wouldn't work I don't think... But, despite all this a run in the woods or field will still set off an allergy flare up, so I'm not sure it's fair to keep going if he can't have any fun, only agreed to this trial really because the vet was sort of insisting we try it..!

I feel for you, Kizi but I am sure you will make the right decision. XXX
We made the decision with Lexi in August although she was only 16 months old, but it was no longer fair to keep trying things with her IBD as nothing managed to control it and her quality of life was becoming very compromised.

Well mac is on another 3-4 weeks antibiotics... Apparently with skin staph infections it can take 4 weeks + for the antibiotics to fully work. Because his is worse vet feels he will probably need the 6 weeks. If, after that time the infection returns again after a few days, (he's had twice now 3 weeks of antibiotics and it's returned within days both times) then we know we have lost as it will mean he has developed an intolerance to his own skin basically.. The bacteria that cause this infection live on all skin. With his allergies and sensitive skin, if he scratches the bacteria get in and results in infection, which requires weeks of antibiotics to heal. If after that it returns it will mean he has become intolerant to that bacteria being on him at all, in which case he would require several baths a week to constantly disinfect him, and he would need a vaccine treatment, injecting dead bacteria regularly (every day for weeks, then every other day etc etc until a level of maintenance injections can be achieved.. Can take years) to try rebuild immunity. That's no life for a old dog, so it's fingers crossed please that the next few weeks are good to him and he recovers.. He's still going to have allergies.. And will still have to stay away from all grass and plants but if he can get over this infection I can improve his life somewhat.. I haves a plan.. But he has to get over infection first.. Oh, and the chicken broth... Amazing!!!

That would be such a lot for him to deal with if the antibiotics don't work, I'll be keeping everything crossed for you both.

Yes, and I would be the one inflicting the torturous baths and injections.. Which won't happen to my lovely boy! I really hope this works, my vet is a skin expert so he is getting the best care possible!

Never saw that sorry PB Same as.. Skin not clearing like it should be after a week back on antibiotics, considering he was only 4 days off them, so vet wants to see him this week.. I've just spent a LOT of money on grooming equipment, professional blower/drier and outdoor hot water sorted this week so I can wash him more.
On the chicken broth front.. I got a bit daring lol It's now got minced red meat (I didn't ask what!!) livers, Apple cider vinegars and turmeric!!! Couldn't get him to eat the turmeric before but he's still gobbling up, and because the now named 'sauce' is becoming so healthy my two small girls are getting some too!!! They also need both ACV and turmeric so all good! Everyone lives it! Wish I could afford to cook all their food!!
