I find snow is great for bare feet, it provides brilliant support, even with weak frogs that aren't in ground contact normally the snow packs in and provides stimulation. Talin and Henry (unshod) both seem to lose the snow/ ice every two or three steps. Henry was struggling a bit on the very rutted frozen ground near the gate but Talin was fine on it. Now they're levelled it off a bit

Logically this would be another reason why old horse folk always removed shoes in the winter, especially as historically there was a lot more snow around. I can't see why most horses cannot be given a 2-3 month break from shoes over the winter as work levels are inevitably lower and zero when we get current weather conditions - it is surprising how much good a short break can do.

I asked about this before and someone suggested putting socks over their shod feet! hehe ;D I think I may actually give this a try as so far my method of picking of feet every 2 mins is a little frustrating. I would love to have my horse barefoot but unfortunately this is not an option for her so we just have to work with what we have I might be with you on this one LOL ;D always up for experimenting I have found so far a big dollop of the effol hoof oil has worked the best tho. I have had some barefoot people saying that they have had problems with footiness over the ice and working. Hmmm maybe if we could guarantee a nice long snow/frozen spell it would be worth taking the shoes off, but that is the problem now i guess people do still exercise there horses quite a lot in winter. with schools/flood lights, shift work etc and all year round competitions. Certainly something to think or look at more tho perhaps.. the seasonal hoof...? hmmmmmm

Good point specialized... I was actually thinking that next time we have snow forecast I might be tempted to take the shoes off seen as we can't do much anyway. May have this discussion with my farrier!
