I sometimes just put hot water on their feeds as far more hot will soak in than cold.
Currently mine are managing to break the ice on the trough, still grazing on frozen grass (Henry can't imagine why a horse would choose to stop grazing just because it's frozen!) and they're having soaked hay complete with icicles!
I've seen Talin grazing before now when we had 4-5 inches of snow, he just snow ploughs it as he goes.

Theres precious little under the snow at mine though - else id not be so bothered, they do have a nibble but not enough for me to not worry about how little liquid theyre getting.
I was wondering earlier if its a bit of lowering the body temp if they pee so not drinking much?! Like scuba divers/skiers??!

Just thought if the bi carb doesn't work you could try Horse Quencher, supposed to be very good and I don't think the price is too horrendous but I haven't looked into whether it's just another way of getting sugar into the water (that was my first thought, cynical as I am!! but it might be worthn looking at).

My little man sunk 6 litres this morning and 8 litres tonight, tried putting the molasses in cold water and he wouldn't touch it at all.
I am now wondering whether he actually won't drink the cold as he has sensitive teeth.... he does still have wolf teeth top and bottom and they don't look particulary pleasant to me.....might just get the dentist to check next time he's out.
Just for a laugh i tried giving the warmed molassed water to my mare, she promptly spat it at me then picked the bucket up and threw it all over me, not nice being covered in sticky warm water - yuck, she doesn't do 'sugars' you see........LOL!

i tried the bicarb tonight and both my boys LOVED it!! i'm soooo pleased - they both absolutely guzzled it down - i kept having to switch the bucket from one muzzle to the other hehe
i give them soaked feeds anyway (whole oats, alfalfa and sugar beet), but i've been adding 2 litres extra water to each feed to make it more soupy to make sure they're getting plenty of fluid... after they've eaten i also swill their buckets with clean water and offer them the "yummy water" to drink hehe
i've shut them out of the track tonight as it was getting treacherous with standing water/puddles freezing solid, and put them back in the field which i was planning on resting for hay, so there is some grass to keep them going, as well as their hay, so hopefully they're getting enough moisture... their trough keeps freezing over and i've had to break the ice several times today!

The only footprints going to the troughs last night were mine. This morning it looks as though the foals have been to the trough once, but only one of the big boys has.

I just have a tub of loose table salt in the corner of the stable. She takes what she needs and I do notice the salt going down when I have been riding her a lot. She is still drinking and weeing as normal so I think it is working for her
