Lol yes Bertie!! I need rugs with belly covers! And dont think I haven't thought if I can make them! Lol I've fence off the worse muddy part so hopefully that will help.. Problem with brushing is is he isn't willing to stand there! Gets very antsy! And I don't want to stress the little boy.. Will try brushing with one of those combs though maybe with a haynet in front of him... See if it makes a difference.
Furniture polish!!! Seriously! Lol

Mine are a bit like that, I've got a Sec A and an Exmoor with really hairy bellies and legs and the mud comes u to their knees (they are stabled on a night). I spent a while yesterday trying to get some off but gave in the end- they'll soon be moulting! If you try snapping it with your fingers it'll crumble then. I got it off round their joints and bendy bits so it doesn't pull but just left it on their bellies, it's not doing any harm.

Is there not a stable nearby you could rent for a couple days? I had to do that for Jay when he was lame last winter.
