I started to keep a record of horse keeping costs when I had Zack. I stopped when one months costs topped £500 - I had bought a ton of wood pellets that month though but a lot of it was vets bills - and he was PTS about 3 or 4 months after that. Now I try not to think about it too much!!

3 horses on DIY in Surrey:
stable rent - £490 haylage/hay - £150 feed - £50 bedding - £120 trimmer - approx £80 (£120 every 7-8 weeks) insurance - £120
= £1010 plus extras such as paying YO to turn out sometimes etc, buying rock salt, treats etc - usually comes to about £1200 in winter and closer to £1000 in summer as less bed and hay is used

i daren't add it up, but this must be why i never have any money! my stable is £100 per month, buy shavings and hay and straw in bulk, so that occurs every few months, was £150 this month, but ok for at least another month. Farrier next week £45 - fronts only and trim behind. Poor lad won his feed at a competition- speedi beet, veteran mix and joint supplement, may need another bag of mix in a week or so, have run out of vit an min supplement, but after reading an article it said not to over do vits and mins so going to stop. Thankfully vets visit on insurance, so am not going to worry about that - might have a bit of a paddy when i see how much they have actually charged - since we do pay in the end. Can't think of other things at moment.

ALOT! But I find if I don't tot it all up it's better - when I tally up all my bills it actually looks like I'm living on a minus figure, so I don't! But, this year's difference means;
Extra straw for night stabling Extra hay for stabling and as there's no grass in the field now MF treatments Towels Kitchen roll New rug Twice as much diesel as I have to go up twice a day now, plus having to source decent hay and travel about 10m to get it once a week or so. And a 20kg sack of wasted Hi Fi Lite!

Are you sitting down? Part livery £450 Haylage £45 Set of bandage pads x2 £40 2 x Sports therapist visit £170 Saddle check & reflock £80 Prolite pad £60 Emergency vet, bute, antibiotics, blood test £293 Repeat blood test to check response to antibiotics: £135 Iodine antiseptic & dozens of melolin £25 More antibiotics £50 2 rolls of cotton wool £5 Lesson £35 Insurance £34 Oh and there's another vet bill in the post which I'd guess will be in the region of £200 but since IU haven't seen it yet it'll be paid in January!! £1422. Yes that's for one small horse. This is what happens when you're a cheapskate and try to keep your insurance premium down by agreeing to a £500 excess.

Last month was spectacularly expensive with a dermatology referral to Rossdales plus an emergency colic and routine vaccs and teeth due, (separate horses!) before the usual feed and bedding etc. All covered by insurance but still two excesses of £150 each plus the vaccs etc. A very useful thread for anyone contemplating horse ownership - expect the unexpected Think my vet will be having a good Christmas (Joke Kathrynp!!) x
