Does anyone else know how to plait a bed? I'll give you a clue - has to be straw and there is no point with loose boxes. I only did it a very few tmes but it did look smart.

The front of the beds were plaited where we stabled at the Pony Club Championships! And this wasn't quite in the dark ages, although it was last century... 1999 I think

I'd have to do one and then take a pic - might do it in the next couple of days if I remember. Basically you slightly damped the edge of the straw bed, and then kind of rolled it under into itself. It stayed put very well unless horses' feet got involved, but mainly it was used for stalls, because it was the edge only. I bet the Household Cavalry still do it!

At college we were always told to roll the front of the bed if they were on straw - you laid your broom down at the front of the bed and rolled the straw around it!! Bonkers!!!

I'd heard about plaiting beds but never actually had to do it - and I did my BHSAI way back in 1985, so I don't know how I escaped! Squaring up the muck heap was always enough tidying up for me.

I am sad enough to still do this myself if I have a straw bed, very infrequent but have one on a part straw at the moment and do pride myself on plaiting the edge...........sad OCD freak.......

So... what's the exact science then? I want to go OCD for one day at least, it'd make a change from being an OCD poo-picker, lol!

Yep, I am certainly old enough to have plaited straw beds....
But, I don't think you could do it today as straw is chopped much shorter than in days of yore, when straw strands were very much longer thann today. We actually put a running plait into the front of the bed and it had a very practical use as it stopped the bed being dragged out of the stable when the horse exited.
These days I just brush the straw into a neat line at the front of the stable....
