Sarcoids
What is it?
Apart from being a total pain in the wotsit... Sarcoids are areas or lesions or tumours that can appear anywhere on the horse. Sometimes referred to as warts, the term sarcoid actually covers a wide range of tumours that can appear one one horse completely differently to another. Sarcoids do not spread to internal organs, they are always associated with the skin and/or the tissue directly under it. Any horse of any age could be affected by sarcoids but it is generally accepted that once your horse has one, they are predisposed to have more. Some horses live normal lives with sarcoids, some horses suffer badly with them.
Causes
Sarcoids are still being understood - which makes the causes unknown really. Some think sarcoids are caused by virus and bacteria, some think it is a form of cancer. This makes treatment very difficult but not hopeless!
Symptoms
* Skin lesions
* Skin warts
* Loss of hair (very early stages)
* Raised areas of skin (very early stages)
* Open sores
* 'Barnacles' on the skin
Diagnosis
A swap or tissue sample should be taken by a vet to confirm sarcoids. Do not delay in getting a vet out if you notice any changes on your horses skin as other life-threatening illnesses could be mistaken for sarcoids. The quicker the diagnosis, the more chance you have of a treatment being successful. Consult with your vet...
Treatment
The holy grail for many horse owners. A quick look on the internet brings up millions of different treatments, most contradicting each other. Speak to your vet about possible treatments. If you have had success with a treatment please post below... Barrier creams, veterinary and surgical procedures, radiation therapy and more have been given as options, along with holistic herbs and lotions. The main thing here is speak to a professional about your horse and their sarcoids, someone who has seen the horse and knows their history.
