Not sure if it's new or not but just thought I'd share for anyone that rides alone! Super idea if it works! www.horseridersos.com/

That sounds like a great idea in principle. I don't have a smartphone, but my husband has. He's just read a review of this app, out of curiosity, and apparently the alert is sent by email and not by sms. So unless your contact is constantly checking their emails, or gets a text-like alert when they receive one, they may not find out straight away.
Obviously this is just one person's experience. There may be settings that can be changed.

My mobile has an sos button on it as standard, I don't need to tell it I am going anywhere, just press the button and it will send my exact grid ref to any number of pre-selected phones. Purchased it as I was fed up of breaking my other normal phones, (crushed, dropped, wet, bits of hay stuck behind the glass ). Its a Seals phone, only downside is its a bit of a brick, but waterproof, dustproof, run over proof, long battery life & has the sos button! Highly recommend as an alternative.

Any idea where I can get a Seals phone? I have killed 2 Blackberrys (dropped one in the loo, and the other on the floor) and one iphone, which drowned in my pocket during a torrential downpour at a show. Current iphone has a squashed face but still works ;D I have also killed 2 laptops, by falling asleep with a cup of coffee in my hand, which consequently upended itself on the keyboard! I shouldn't be let loose with technology! ;D
