That is all sounding so positive Laura, i really hope this is the start of a true recovery for him, you both deserve that.
Can i just ask (did i read it right) was it the redworm that could have been in his arteries etc ?
I lost my Quinn to this in January, they were everywhere, he had a biopsy done which showed terrible damage to his gut wall. He went from fine, to a walking skeleton in a matter of days, and was so very poorly. The person who had him before me had used panacur equine guard on him, but the redworm are showing an immunity to this.
Newmarket were fantastic with helping out with diagnostics, but they said they`d never seen a horse with redworm damage as severe as this, still alive.
I gave him the best chance i could, but in the end he gave up .. and i let him go. Redworm (small/encysted/inhibited) are truly awful, and the damage they can do with in the body is just terriying ... so many people aren`t aware of the extent of how these lil critters get in to the horses body ... i certainly wasn`t until all the blood tests and biopsies done on my boy. It was only then did i start reading up about it and finding out more. Like you, i always wormed as a matter of course.
Fingers crossed this has sorted BF out once and for all x

Well fingers crossed for you and your lad! He certainly has been through it, and I think you deserve an award for most persistent owner. Here's hoping to a bright future for 2012!!

Crikey I was not aware of the damage they can do to a horse horrid things. Mine has a blood test yearly for tape work and red worm as I do know they are not easy to pick up in worm counts..hope your boy improves more and more...

Thanks for posting this Laura, it sounds consistent with my boys problems too! I will definitely ask my vets although they are likely to say that he looks too well to have a worm infestation I really hope you have found the source of Big Fellas problems, everything crossed for you

I really hope your vets listen Spanish eyes, my boy looks great too and certainly didnt look wormy, never has ! We used dectomax injected in to muscle (which isnt licenced for horses but often given by vets for treatment of mites in horses) It was my choice, my boy is fine with injections so it was easy, he had 33mls then another 33mls 3 weeks later Dectomax isnt that expensive about £35 for 50 mls, you can buy off the net without prescrition Fingers crossed your vet gives it a go and it helps your horse too

I've got the same treatment for Lena too (coconut oil). I leave a jar near the radiator so it's melted by morning ready to measure for Lena's breakfast. Where do you get yours from then ? Its sounding as if Lena could be a candidate for redworm, again, she has alaways been wormed and had equest, pramox, equimax, strongid-p in past. Does Donna pull the bloods or you get your own vet in to do that ?

Hi Lulu I havent ordered my coconut oil yet but a friend is lending me some tomorrow as its xmas and i wont have it delivered that quick, shall be ordering some soon I think donna wrote down supplier name Donna diagnosed via rectal exam although i think bloods can show problem All i can say is i have a very happy chilled out boy again this eve ;D I would have thought if donna thought lena was a candidate she would have diagnosed but you can always ask her if you are worried I have used equest equimax tablets panacur guard and equitape for worming an dworm counts always been 100% clear! I have to feed it in food as the big fella trys to kill you when you have a wormer syringe anywhere near him, the only injury he has given me was when i tried putting a wormer syringe in his mouth got reared on knocked over and trampled maybe thats why he had the problem as previous owners didnt bother ?!

This sounds really promising. As ever, whenever I read about you and Big Fella, I am struck by your dedication to him. It's really inspiring. PS. When I do read your updates, I do sometimes wonder if Big Fella is actually his name...

Hi Laura,
Gosh another ordeal... hopefully this will be the last one :/.
Its all really worrying isn;t it whats actually going on inside a horses body, all these things to consider. Nancy groans when peeing... hope I have nothing to worry about there...
Heres to 2012 being the year for you & the Big One xx

Our vets saw unprecidented amounts of horses poorly with this when i lost Quinn. The hind Gut problems are there in a lot of cases, and like you, i`m hoping the more people who read this realise just how serious it can be .... I hope he`s feeling a bit better now x

I think the main problem with wormers is not giving enough of it. A friend from college is doing her dissertation on this and has found out there are huge variations in results from different weigh tapes, from the formula to calculate weight from measurements and from actual weight on a weigh bridge. If you are dosing at too low a dose the worms become resistant. It's very difficult to overdose on wormers, most need something like 50 times the dose before they are going to cause problems but you can cause many problems by not giving enough. Although you may worm at the right time with panacur guard you may not give enough and won't treat the problem.

Oh Laura I've only just seen this. Big hugs to you and gentle ones to BF. That poor horse has been through so much. You truely are an inspiration with your dedication to him and setting him on his road to recovery. I've got everything crossed that this is the answer you've been looking for and you and BF can start enjoying 2012

I've done a little reading about this and it seems it's the large red worm and round worm that migrate in vessels, Small red worm seem to stay in the gut vessels. I'm wondering how effective oral worming is for this situation? Hope Big Fella has a lovely calm Christmas and New Year and a fab 2012.
