Big fella had a few good months in the summer and was longlining well in walk, very chilled out chappy
Then he started cat stretching, crib biting, bit colicy getting stressed and charging off the lines and bucking madly it was not going well again same old story 4 yrs on
Had my vet oesteo out a few weeks ago, his back and pelvis were all wrong yet again (they are always out ) his hind gut was shot to bits despite minimal grass, soaked hay, brewers yeast, linseed, succeeed, chaff less than one percent starch/sugar , its his gut causing his back and pelvis to be painful we've now realised
She heard in germany about horses with red worms which live in the arteries which supply the gut with blood and are resistant to usual wormers and cause anurisiums (sp) so we chatted and gave treatment a go which meant 2 injections 3 weeks apart (decided not to use normal wormers due to his compromised gut)
These worms reduce blood supply to the gut, which causes hind gut problems and in turn cause pelvis and back pain, shes seen and treated a few cases successfully recently just like my boy who didnt repsond to constant back/pelvis oesteo
Can I just add my horse is always wormed for ensisted reds, tapes etc and i worm count him always been 100% clear (last one clear sept) and i poo pick paddock twice a day (even by headtorch)
Anyway one week after 1st worming injection I had a nightmare colicy stessy horse on my hands, lasted another week, few good days then 2nd injection 48 hours later horse trying to kill me, lots of late nights me checking on him, but few days later calmness
vet/oestoe checked him this eve and has reported his pelvis is now mobile ;D all by itself and he kept calm for the whole treatment, his duodenum and pancreas need help to recover and it will take a while but she is positive we are on the right track
Apparently these worms spend most of the time in the arteries so worm counts dont always show them as in our case!
My horse has always been a complete nightmare to worm so maybe previous owners didnt bother and I thought my management was fine, time will tell if he becomes a normal horse after 4 plus years of stress & pain
