Ask your trimmer to provide further information on that Nich, especially why - bute is anti inflammatory as well as analgesic, IMO it is cruel to withold it. That's exactly the point, bute reduces inflammation which reduces the pressure and can allow the infection to sit there and get worse instead of breaking out. Abcesses breaking out is the body expelling the infection and by giving an anti-inflamatory you prevent that process happening. That is a bit of advice I think you'll find splits vets and farriers 50/50.

All I can say is that if I had a blood blister under a nail I know exactly which I would prefer between no intervention or hot needle and analgesia. I can't see any argument for leaving abscess to break out when and where it chooses - what is the rationale behind that?

clearly a debate which could rage forever. But Jill, you could see the blood blister. the point is, often vets don't know the source of the infection. OH's horse a few years ago had the trad approach, vet did x rays and couldnt quite see all the tracks so cut out so much hoof Iolo looked like a goat for 4 months, and it still didn't clear it - cleantrax did.

and meant to say, in the barefoot horse, the sole can be very hard and thick, so v difficult to dig out. Autumn's burst through her heel bulb, I can assure you that was far easier to keep clean/heal up than poor Iolo's goat foot after the vet had finished with it!
