Could they???
It's very odd.... I have a 2yo coloured filly who has terrible photosensitivity this past summer, all her white bits burnt bad and it was a horrible 3 months.
I did as much 'good' handling as I could once she'd recovered but she was very difficult as obviously remembered the pain despite a lot of pain killers, and is still wary about being touched on her white bits and particularly her legs which were worst affected. She is currently turned out with her 2yo best buddy and my old mare. I haven't pushed her on the handling simply because it's possible this is a genetic problem that could reoccur in which case she will be PTS immediately as I won't put her through that hell again, so I've kinda backed off to let her be a horse for a while.
She's not very nice to the old mare and very rude to her, barging through her etc and I was getting worried for my old mare but also that the 2yo has no respect for human or horse, so have been visiting them a few extra times a day to check up.
Yesterday when I went out they were all standing together and the old mare was licking my 2yo. But it was as how you'd handle a scared foal, she'd start at the top and lick and nuzzle there a bit then move down her shoulder a little and back up, she did this over and over working down her legs and back up, then along her back and back to withers, then right under her belly and back up, I've never seen anything like it....it was unbelievable, she was only doing the white parts that had been burnt, and you could see her get even more gentle and go more slowly on the most sensitive areas.
I watched for about 20 mins until 2yo got bored and started playing with a twig. It was moving but a bit worrying.
I'm not sure if it was a coincidence, or if the mare was literally reassuring the filly that it was ok....
The worry part is, has the mare picked up that there's still a problem going on there and was trying to soothe it.........
I've also never seen the 2yo stand so still and quiet nor the old mare be so gentle and patient with any of the youngsters, she usually is only 'nice' to other oldies in the past few years...
Thoughts??
