Just thought I would let you all know that my beautiful boy was put to sleep today. He was only 17 but his body was failing him, he was stiff in his joints and really struggling with the farrier, the vet had exhausted all treatment options and with the onset of winter we decided it was the kindest thing to let him go as he was only going to get worse and had deteriorated rapidly over the latter half of this year.
I've owned him for 10 years and for the last 4 years he has been in the most wonderful loan home where he has been a very pampered pet, they have bent over backwards to accommodate his needs as he has aged and he has been very much loved. Due to a traumatic incident when their old horse was euthanised last summer, they felt unable to stay when Cos was pts so me, my lovely boyfriend and Gem had a nice hour and a half with Cos, waiting for the vet. We did not want him to know anything was wrong so we stayed cheerful for him, fed him lots of carrots and treats, groomed him and gave him lots of fuss.
The vet was fantastic, really careful to make sure everything was just right, he brought an assistant and made sure that the pet crem lady arrived at the same time, so there were three of them on hand which I thought was brilliant. Cos was sedated heavily enough to lose interest in his polos, and it was all very quick, calm and peaceful.
It's desparately sad that he's gone but I'm pleased he won't suffer. Special thanks to Gem for driving all the way from Birmingham to Sheffield to be there for us, you're a true friend and I'm very grateful
Here's the boy in his prime, doing what he was bred to do:
