A very odd thing has happened.
My horse started windsucking badly in August. He had never done it before in the 11 years I have owned him (and he's now 21! so a bit late to start a new "vice"). He was constantly finding something to grab and suck on. About the same time he had blood tests as he was not quite himself and this revealed he was anaemic - both these things could point to ulcers.
I had him scoped and the vet said she hadn't seen a cleaner tummy in a long time! So no ulcers there.
A couple of weeks ago, he got impacted colic, which was treated successfully with a drench and he is right as rain now.
Since then his windsucking has virtually stopped, to the point where he now no longer needs to wear his collar, and when he does do it a quick "Oi!" stops him. He's still anaemic, but on iron supplements and milkthistle.
So could the colic treatment have cleared something that was causing his windsucking?? Any ideas??

I do believe there is a strong connection to windsucking or cribbing and tummy problems, my boy used to windsuck then stopped, he started cat stretching a few months ago and the odd crib or lead rope chew started again He has previously been scoped and like yours was clear of gastric ulcers, however his does have regular mild colic which started a few months aga again and has problems in his hind gut & caecum which you cant scope, his poop stinks and is very dry and not normal He is under the vet at the moment who is back tomorrow late afternoon So yes I think the windsucking your horse was doing expecially as it recently started as a new vice is very likely down to the tummy problems your horse had Glad he is now all better (least you know if he starts cribbing again to watch his tummy)

Thanks for that - it does make sense. Not sure I can cope with another colic - it was all very worrying , particuarly at his age. As you can imagine, his poop production and general demeanour is now constantly being monitored ;D-
