Does anyone know roughly the cost of fencing a field with about 40 posts and barbed wire (cant afford post and rail and as it is an external fence dont want electric) I have just been given the opportunity of renting an additional 4 acres for my 3 boys which I am delighted about - I get 3 months free in exchange for doing the external fence line. I have got a fencing contractor coming on Friday who i have used before but no idea on price! Any ideas welcome

Your posts will be around £1.50 each and barbed wire will be around £20 for a roll, there is quite a lot on a roll, from memory I think 200m. 50 metre rolls of stock fence are around £55. You will need staples too. Your posts should not be more than about 6 feet apart especially if you are only having barbed wire. You could get the fencing done immediately with barbed then buy a roll of stock fence whe you can afford it and add them when you can.

Thanks - I am getting a local contractor to do it as it is just too much to do by hand - fingers crossed I can actually afford it!!!! I am really looking forward to the extra space as that is the only disadvantage of where I am now. I have gone from 2 acres for 3 horses to 6 acres which is just perfect. So happy!!!

If you are getting a contractor to install stock fencing with barb on the top you would be looking from £5 per metre.

It recently cost me 700 for a contractor to do 250 metres of stock fencing with 2 lines of bull wire, hopefully that will give you some idea

Round here they're quoting £5 a metre for stock fence with barbed wire on top, but only if there is no old fence to clear, that costs more.

Please reconsider using barb wire. I have seen far too many horrible accidents with horses and barbed wire in the past to consider it. I'd use posts and thick electric fencing with either a connection to the mains if possible, or big batteries and a charger.
All our huge fields are post and railed, but are all split into smaller fields using post and electric rope. This has been more than successful for us for years and years.
