I've always been a big fan of the Fal rugs and have several for Henry. I've been toying with buying him a new one but was put off by people saying that when Slumberdown bought the company the quality of the rugs went down. I think they company is now owned by someone else and I wondered if they had gone back to being good again? Any feedback gratefully received ;D

I always used the old purple Fall ones and they were great but the new green/tweed things rub(Same sizes same horses) and the clips are cheap and like Jen 1 I used premier Equine instead and they are great for a nice fit that stays in shape- though again they 'tweek' things and you wonder why?!

Sharon tried my PE rug on Henry but it was completely the wrong shape for him, nowhere near wide enough at the front and around his neck so sadly that's not an option.

I'm pretty sure fal were bought by loveson. Since then the only ones I've had in for washing are slumberdown and chieftan and they're not great quality. They still sell the top of the range ones but I haven't seen them in the flesh. If I were you I'd keep an eye on ebay for the older ones, horseware still seem to be good quality if you want to buy new

I got one last year for Jasmine. Think it was the Chieftain, 200g, with zip on neck (bit of a bugger to get on when rug already on horse!) and it is a sort of bronzey colour. Lovely looking rug, fits her well, worn all last winter, no rubs, no leaks. She is quite narrow, don't think it would suit a chunky horse. The only thing I'm not keen on are the front clips, which are those t-shaped type, like the ones you get on belly straps. She has got caught on the fence a couple of times, and once on a haynet that had 'dropped' when empty.

Not good news then. I'd heard that they had been bought again and I think you're right Emma, it was by loveson so if you've had rugs in since then and they haven't been any better it's probably not worth the risk. I was very disappointed that the PE rug didn't fit him as I was all set to get one but the cut of the neck is not right for him at all. I would get a horsewear one as they do fit but I wanted a 40grm one and they only do no fill or 200grm. I guess he'll have to keep wearing his old ones then though they are starting to look a bit past their best!! Thanks everyone.

I'm very happy with my Weatherbeetas - nice and roomy in front, though I had to go a size up for a good fit. I didn't know about the Fal/Loveson quality though, and have been looking at the few on ebay for stable rugs... don't think I'll bother now!

I have an older but barely used Fal pro with silver interactive lining, I think it is a HW 6'3, I keep meaning to put it on ebay.... I loved the older Fal rugs but have also heard since they became Loveson the quality is rubbish.

I have a Fal rug a few years old now but the buckle at the front has bent now - it's not got caught in anything though. Nice shape on Flynn who is quite wide being part Welsh at the front.

I spoke to a local saddlers today and they said that Fal was now owned by TAG and the quality appears to be back to pre slumberdown levels. They said they had refused to stock them for the last two years or so because the quality was so poor but that they had not had any negative feedback from anyone with the new lot they have sold. I do trust what they say as they have always given me good service in the past. They also recommended a Mark Todd rug which was 100 grms but actually feels quite thin. As they work out considerably cheaper I might be tempted providing they fit. The only horses I've ever seen them on have been TB types so I don't know if I can get my fat cob in one!!!! Thanks for all the feedback.
