I imagine it's a similar mechanism to those used for operating cages in mineshafts — only at a 90º angle!

Presumably it is an electric motor and pulley system, but there needs to be a clutch mechanism to stop it driving if a horse stops.

Jen could you look at buying a second hand one to use the parts to adapt as you want?
My lack of physics let's me down but the motor/pulley system will possibly meet resistance at the 'corners'. You don't want something that speeds up down the long sides and slows on the short sides... Hmm. Interesting idea tho, can't wait to hear more!

An oval possibly won't work due to various forces and any arms that reach the furthest points of the oval could be weaker or loads longer that they need to be on the shorter sides.
My husband puts conveyor belts in quarries, he's due home for lunch I'll bribe him for an answer with a plate of grub. He may even be able to source you a motor that works and some technical advice, he will know. When he knows it's you he'll not need bribing after the help you gave us with that shoulder wound in the summer......and could you please book another ride on Rocky as there is a surprise waiting!!!!!!

I saw details of an oval horsewalker on-line recently (racking brains frantically!!), I'll have a look and see if I can find it again - I'm 99% sure it's a German design.

Wow, now that's what I call a horse walker! Looks a bit like ski lift type technology? Fab. I can't see why you couldn't have different surfaces.
You mean a water tray Jen rather than a Physio pool I assume??

now that really is impressive and shows it can be done - just need to adapt whats affordable and make it work.

That is amazing - but on a more down to earth level what about utilising something like the "skyline" equipment that is used for taking trees out of the woodland.Look at forestry equipment You could almost ( with the aid of telegraph poles and an imaginative pully system/s) have one going round your track system

ha ha, thought of that, i just want the water to be about a foot deep, i'm thinking that high stepping action will help keep backs strong while disinfecting feet though not sure what id use, and the pea gravel would help keep feet in good nick, pie in the sky atm , but we have room and i'm not overly keen on having to make my crust out of this place for livery happy to have a selected few , but no more numpties, therapy appeals though my original idea for this place,

If it's therapy / rehab don't dismiss the pool. You ll need a slope in and out, so the max depth distance might be constrained by that? But a concrete base could be used? I'm thinking the textured kind they use in kids outdoor paddling pools? I'm sitting here and it's a bit like 'dream team' for me going through all sorts of possibilities You know even therapy yards have horse owners

What about a ford crossing type thingy, gravel down into a pool and out again, maybe for the disinfecting a footbath with some provita hoof sure stuff in it.
