Personally I have given up on insurance for mine, its ridiculously expensive, and it only covers £5k, then they quibble over every little thing and put exclusions on the policy etc etc.
I have put some money aside in a vets fees fund and put the premium I would have paid into it each month. I reckon when I make a claim against that fund the "insurer" will be much more happy to pay.
MTA - I am a BHS member so I do have liability insurance for them of course, as you cant do without that.

I did think about that, what is the £ excess on the BHS liablity insurance?

If you are looking for vet cover and your horse is 20 you may find it hard to start a new policy.

Try NFU Mutual. I seriously cannot recommend them enough, probably not the cheapest in premiums but by far the best insurance company I have ever had dealings with, both for my horse and for my dog. And the people on the end of the phone are just lovely when you break down in tears, doh!! My best friend has just this month gone to work for them, (depressingly that doesnt get me a discount lol) she was absolutely amazed at their work ethic, she has worked in insurance for the last 15 years and has never come across a company who puts more effort into keeping existing customers then recruiting for new. They also pride themselves in finding reasons to pay rather than reasons not to which is unlike every other insurance company I have ever dealt with!! Not sure if they'll insure a 20yr old but well worth a try.

I agree NFU are wonderful, but they wanted a 50% increase in my premium last year - I just could not afford to pay it! I have never claimed in my life so just could not understand why it would go up so much.
I dont think there is any excess on the BHS public liability insurance as far as I know, but to be sure you would need to check the small print.

Thanks everyone i do sometimes think whether i should bother insuring him or just open a savings account, at his age a major expense would probably be colic surgery and i doubt i would put him through it so not quite sure what i would spend 5k on vet bill wise?

Animal Friends are very reasonable and do a veteran policy with limited vet cover

so not quite sure what i would spend 5k on vet bill wise? You'd be surprised, an awkward tooth extraction could cost £1000 and any injury requiring repeated visits from a vet can add up very quickly. As I said before I don't think there are many companies that will take on a new policy for a 20yo to cover vets, so check carefully before stopping your existing policy if you need vet cover.

I would totally recommend KBIS. I have had 2 claims running at the same time recently, one for about £1,500 and the other which maxed my £5k limit. They paid both out very quickly, directly to the vets/hospital with no questions asked.
Up to that point I had never claimed and wondered why I pay out so much money each month but I have been very grateful of the insurance over the last couple of months.
In what was (and still is) a very stressful time with my boy I am so grateful that KBIS didn’t make it any harder.

www.carriagehouseinsurance.co.uk They are fab, not too pricey & pay out very quickly. I considered stopping mine this year with Willow as I've never called on it in 6 years, & this year she went down with impacted colic & had a vet bill for £2k so very pleased I didn't stop it
