Oh and a yard I went to look at advertised loads of facilities including a round pen and a horse walker. Great I thought and went to talk to the yard owner. Round pen was only for use by her for starting youngsters, only she was able to put horses on horse walker and charged £10 for £15 mins. Loads of the yard was out of bounds, but was so higgldy piggldy I would never have known where I could and couldn't go, just little pockets out of bounds! And all horses kept out together as a herd, which was fine but you had to do 4 wheelbarrows a week poo picking each if out during the day, and 2 a day if out 24/7. Uva does a wheelbarrow a week in winter and 2 a week in summer so this seemed extreme!! And you were only allowed a bale of hay and a bale of straw at a time and had to order it in advance from her.

I was once told by a YO that the graffiti on my horse's rug was ruining the view from her bedroom window so would I please buy a new rug! (rug was marked with postcode in white paint). I only stayed at that yard 2 weeks

I'm afraid most of the rules are there for a reason or bad experiences before but the one and only time I did use a yard and being an adult before I got my first horse the yard owner was lovely trying to explain all the rules but the other liveries were horrible shouting at me for using some ones private wheel barrow (it had no name on it and was in the same place as the others) same with a brush, jumping the queue to wash his tale, I had no idea there was a queue it went on and on, when I spoke to the yard owner she told me to ignore them but it is hard when you get dirty looks and people grumping at me. I was told to use a box to groom and tack (He was on grass 24/7) but God forbid if his hoof skimmed the sawdust and disturbed it, again it wasn't the yard owner, I did sweep up but obviously not well enough!! So I left, rented a field and now have no one to answer too apart from myself. Wouldn't do it again if at all possible.

Reading all these do's and don'ts make me feel very lucky! where I keep my boy sensible rules are there only for the benefit of the horses and safety of everyone. I chose the yard because of their IH phylosophies and feel very lucky to have such experts on hand. I am sometimes reminded if I forget some basics( my worst sin is forgeting to tie up when grooming, my boy is so well mannered) , but always nicely and always with a very clear explanation of the reasons why. There are alot of young people on the yard and as I am an adult i I am a role model. My horse is so happy at this yard, as I can't always get there through the week because of work I know he is consistently well handled and cared for, because of the intelligent rules and routines of the yard.

Not including stable dung which is a wheelbarrow in total (including all bedding)
Uva poops 10-12 times in a 24 hour period, unless i am riding when she will poop 3 times in an hour ;-) she also doesn't like to wee in her stable so generally stable is nearly dry (that's with a full bed)

Here are our yard rules:
DON’T FORGET BEFORE LEAVING YARD
1. SKIP OUT STABLES AND SET BEDS FAIR
2. REFILL WATER BUCKETS
3. REMOVE EMPTY HAYNETS FROM STABLES
4. SWEEP THE YARD
5. WASH CUPS
6. FILL KETTLE UP (IN CASE OF FROST OVERNIGHT)
7. CHECK THE TACKROOM FOR CATS
8. SWITCH OFF ALL LIGHTS
9. LOCK UP
Our lot live out permanently, so its just keeping the stables neat and tidy when horses have come into the yard and stood in for a bit. It's also infuriating to always be the one who fills up the water buckets and haynets only for someone else to use them (we don't have allocated stables) and not refill them. In our experience if you start having loads of rules then it shows that something is wrong with the yard. Rules should be easy to follow and sensible so that everyone realises why they are there. Ours used to be pinned up on the tack room door (which reminds me to do another one) as a reminder for everyone before they left.
