Shan LOL - I have had few exeriences over the years of "incorrect broom operation"!!. You can of course see the point ( or bristle) it has been used that way for so long that sweeping the other way wll disturb the flow!( of dust?):0)
Or even "no not like that 3 sweeps and then bang bang on the floor - nothing else works" Several working pupils sweeping up chanting "1 2 3 bum bum" and laughing till they almost fell over. with a nameless yard owner tuttting loudly in the back ground ( annoyingly not quiet tutting in time)

The yard rule I have which most people seem to have difficulty accepting is my zero tolerance for any violence towards horses. Insane but true! Another is no feeding treats from hand. -feed all you want from floor or bucket but no hand treats, this one came about because of one stupid horse owner who insisted on teasing the horse daily and making him beg for his apples etc, I asked her politely not to tease him etc and explained why, but it made her feel good?! When I later pointed out that he had tried to bite a few kids she said 'I'm not stopping, smack him or close his top door over' -um, ya, she's no longer here, poor horse...

we do have a few yard rules but not strange ones
let someone know where you are goin if riding out and make sure you either have your mibile on you or take the ayrd mobile with numbers preprogrammed in them in case of accidents......we have very busy roads round here
Hi viz to be worn if riding out............
if you mess it up then clean it up
YO feeds all horses in the morning but we do night feeds and nets
Please keep tings tidy put stuff back (spades forks buckets barrows) back where they are supposed to be
No shouting no messing around and no acting the fool round the horses especially the youngsters

A livery yard I was at when I was a teenager was that I was not allowed on site without an adult and I was not allowed to get my horse in from the field it had to be an adult, fair enough but when there was a 10 year old girl who's parent used to drop her up there and leave her to get her pony in on her own and leave her up there all day at weekends I found it a bit wrong! I later found out the YO thought my horse bullied the rest so I must be the same lol she also banned me from going up there because my horse was a bully do I had to send my loan pony home but when they picked her up they soon shut the YO up and even slapped her when they found my pony in the corner of the field surrounded by the other horses trying to kick her and the little 10 year old girl on the other side of the fence whipping my pony, needless to say between me and my old ponies owner we ran them out of business and they had to shut down, I'm just so glad my pony got out I there as much as I still miss her

Ah the memories of training in correct sweeping technique! I remember being bellowed at for 'sweeping that yard as if you re sweeping a kitchen'!!! Yip, 3 sweeps then bang, and all in parallel lines of course! Sad thing is I do still do it that way! Then you have the places where you can't find a broom as they are all labelled and you can't use so and so's. I used to help at local RS as an adult and it drove me mad when folks thought it okay to leave fronts of boxes and wheel barrow spills 'as it ll all get swept when we do the yard'! Reminded me of wAitresses I worked with in a second rate hotel who would brush crumbs onto the floor between customers at breakfast because 'it'll be hoovered up before lunch'!! Eek!

I rent a yard with two friends but the yard owner lives on the premises. He is pretty good but can come out with some classic 'rules' ;D The best one was when my friend was given a black metal bird feeder and hung it at the back of the stables so we could watch the birds when having a coffee break. The YO requested that we take it down because 'the white metal bracket doesn't match the feeder' We are miles from the next property and in the middle of the woods! Who's going to see? ;D They have also moaned that the 'muck heap smells and they have to shut the windows' - the house is at least 300 yards from the yard ;D On the whole, they just leave us to run the place as we see fit. We keep it immaculately tidy and pay the rent on time, so I guess they're happy enough ;D

As it happens I very rarely feed from my hand, but I find it a bit draconian to be told I'm not allowed, he's my horse!

after reading this ive got rules! yay, one of mine was zero tolerance to ingnorant violance, i mean fair enough if if the horse is going to be knocking you flying , i think i tolerate standing your ground, but how people do things is such a grey area,

That would bother me too.
We have very few rules at our yard. All horses go out as a herd together in the morning unless we have requested they stay in for whatever reason. All horses come in as a herd together in the evening (open the gate and they put themselves to bed). They all get their morning and evening feed together (but you can hold yours back if you want to ride).
They are just the yard routines really rather than hard rules. In summer you can stay out 24/7, daytime only, night time only, whatever you want.
If anyone is causing problems with theirs or their horse's behaviour, then the YO will have a quiet word.
The YO's philosophy is that she appreciates people have different methods but if the horse is happy and there is no hostility to other liveries she lets you get on with it :-)

Me too!
I guess the last livery I was at was a bit strange as the owner didn't really have much of a clue and took the advice of one of the liveries who chose the rules to suit her mostly. They cut their own hay but that field (the best winter field) was ONLY used for hay until we had a bit of a spat with the vet on our side. She had some gorgeous oaks in the other field which two of us thought should be fenced off during autumn or use the 'hay' field after harvest - no go (she convinced herself we wanted the oaks cut down) until the fave liveries mare coliced. THEN we were allowed to move them. You also had to buy hay from her field (we all helped bring it in and stack it) at normal price if I remember (wasn't cheap) and you weren't allowed to chose the hay you wanted, had to take from the front regardless. Also ALL horses were brought in overnight from 5 Nov regardless of the weather/conditions. Eventually two of us were thrown off but I can't remember why!
Last in the UK was renting a stable and fieldspace - only problem there was another livery who 1) accused me of trying to kill her COPD mare by leaving the stable door open (her mare was loose on the yard and pinched some hay) 2) told me where I should graze my gelding who'd been there quite some time (no field shelter where she suggested I put him) 3) got upset when I agreed to swap stables but asked her to move my rubber mats as she deep littered and I wasn't keen 4) told the owner I was compromising her horses health by NOT worming when I was worm counting and targetting appropriately
Keep them on my own now - bliss.

As it happens I very rarely feed from my hand, but I find it a bit draconian to be told I'm not allowed, he's my horse! I understand that, and should clarify, most of my 'liveries' are folks that have my ponies on loan/livery here. I'm not opposed to the odd treat from an owner that knows what odd or good behaviour is! I also have had huge problems in the past with liveries offering treats to my ponies, many of whom are handled by kids or are often on 'manners training' One pony in particular when he came had been used to getting over the door treats in previous home, he nipped everyone his first week here, my niece has treats for him and a treat bucket, he gets a treat after a good day etc cause it's good for the kids too to say thanks their way, he has never nipped since that first week.... If it's ur horse and he is behaved and not mugging people I actually don't care what u do! Here included, but most people round here aren't very IH minded and only care about their own feel good factor...

the list is endless, the main one that was bugging me for the last 3 months was: no using the nice new Poly jumps (which me and my mum had to choose, buy and then get reimbursed the cost) in the outdoor school because it ruins the lining...... people are still allowed to free school their horse though and that is even worse because you get huge potholes from them spining!!! This rule has been broken once by a trustee to let 3 liveries play chase me charlie. But i am not allowed to have a jumping lesson, i jump tiny!!! Things might have changed now though as i have just come back from holiday and have seen the jumps next to the menage. So i think it is now allowed because liveries who wanted to play chase me charlie now want to do winter showjumping so need to practice on a 'safe' surface and they don't want to ruin winter grazing.
*hits head on keyboard so i can't list all the other things that annoy me*

Current yard has no odd rules at all, and its bliss! YO is the perfect balance of being there and friendly without crowding, giving opinion when asked but not if you don't ask, and just generally letting you get on with things. Only rules are around bitching, and people will be asked to leave. She is picky about who is on yard but that suits me! I have just moved back there after 10 days away and it was the best thing I ever did, and won't be moving again!!
Yard in the past was owned by a psychopath who would be nice one day and then not the next. She gave me a list of rules when I started there, and then added a new one every day until I physically could not remember what they were! Was there 3 months and I ended up leaving as I was worrying about being there! I was told off like a naughty child nearly every day for something!!
Rules included -Not walking past her field carrying any feed or hay (field was on way to everywhere!!) - There was a gate next to the stables that meant you could get things to stable quickly, but everyone apart from her had to walk right the way around (was a 100m walk instead of a 3m walk!) - Not allowed to use jumps in school (even though I provided half of them!!) unless I asked her first. infact had to let her know an hour before you wanted to use school (even if noone on site- only 3 people there altogether including her so not like school was busy!!) - All horses had to come in together (which was fine) but she would change the time horses came in every day for no reason and then charge me to bring them in as I was at work. - Not allowed to park near barn incase she had a hay delivery (barn was full!!!!) infact whereever I parked was wrong and she told me off. - Not allowed in her part of the barn, but that was where she wanted you to store the made up feeds. - individual turnout so had my own field to manage however Fields had to be padlocked with her padlocks, but mine was rusty and I couldn't open it half the time, had to WD40 it twice a day every day said I was going to replace it and got a tirade of abuse and she confiscated it! - Two muck heaps and certain muck had to go on one and other muck on the other, but she never clarified which way round it was and I always got it wrong. - not allowed to drop hay on floor in hay barn. - got into trouble when I put uva in school to stretch her legs when her field was blocked by snow, as she trotted 3 strides and that might upset her horse. - not allowed to tie horses up on yard incase she wanted to do something with her horses (even when she wasn't there!) - not allowed to put grit down on yard when it snowed as it might damage the concrete, so instead it became an ice rink and horses were stuck in for days on end
the list was endless, would be here all night!
