saddles, or people selling them, all you have to do is look on ebay there are folks selling saddles measured badly , and calling them extra wide when the flocking is about 3 inch apart inside of the pommel, or xxxwide when its only 8 inch from d to d, and then when you look how they have measured they have literary pulled the tape right round to the d;s, i give up im loosing the will to live

Well Talin fitted an 8x balance saddle and is now in an XW dever WH saddle. It has XW stamped on the stirrup bar so sellers of those should be able to check that for you instead of trying to measure bits of it themselves.

Problem is that no 2 saddle manufacturers use the same terminology, one make's XW is the equivalent of another's XXXW. Until there is a standard then there will always be guesswork involved. Also there are so many times where the 'width' of the saddle can only be varied by changing the angle of the bars, rather than the width between the bars. Very few saddles are truly wide, balance are the only english ones that I have seen personally but I am sure there must be more.

Have you seen the Native Pony Saddle stuff..... stunning and as you say Specialised, truly wide.... IF you have 900E to spend. Sigh.

My definition of wide is if i can get my folded fist inside the wither pads and waggle it from side to side easily with an inch or two spare, my friends definition of wide is if her fist just fits inside, same size fist by the way - LOL

I had a Silhouette XW for my previous cob mare and I LOVED it, it sat really well on her roly-poly figure and never slipped .... (sorry for sitting wonky, totally my fault, but it does illustrate her width rather well ;D)

I like the look of the Silhouette saddles to, lovely wide gullet, some "wide" saddles have a surprisingly narrow gullet.

It's a saddlery, so should take it back if it's off. Looks great to my eye.

You're probably going to have to have any saddle re-flocked to fit so if they've flocked it poorly does it really matter if you've got a good saddler who can sort it out?
