I like the yard I am on but... they don't want to turn out because the fields are wet!! I am livid! The whole point of me travelling such a distance was because of the winter turnout, and when before I moved on they stipulated that they only didn't go out in snow and out at 11am when it was frosty. They have now said they can't go out when the fields are wet!! It just doesnt make sense, as the fields will not dry out over night!! Nor will it make any difference if they go out later. I text her this morning to ask if they were going out as it was going to be bright day, her reply- later as the fields are still wet . I cant turn out later as I am still in work!! That means they wont get to go out until I get there and it will be dark, so my horses will be in on this glorious day!!! I am FUMING!!! Looking at other yards but none around and finding a place for three horses is hard, and worried I would be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. GGRRRR!!! It annoys me that precious fields are more important than my horses mental & physical well being!!

With having three would it be cheaper to find land to rent somewhere? Rather than livery?
Ive just been down and whipped LW rugs off ours its so glorious after such a wet windy night!

I have looked for land, at other options, Jen even thought about your place again but the travlelling would kill me now I'm working, the petrol wouldn't be a major issue as I am travellling to this yard but I wouldn't get till about yours till about 7PM . I wouldnt have all three to muck out but that would impinge on your lifetstyle. I am so upset they are in again!! Finding decent yards is really really hard.

I'm fired anyway. Job ends next week lol!! Ok, would i need to come every day? That would save fuel if I didn't have to?? PM me some details- I am very tempted as you know I think your place is fantastic and yes it would be good being on a yard where everyone sings from the same hymn sheet!!

I've had a similar issue. When i moved my horse the YO said she gave hers all year turnout. However because its been so wet she is having hers in for 22hrs of the day-not the way to keep a horse imo. Anyway to cut a long story short my horse is on her land but not at her house so me and other livery are putting ours out for about 6-8 hrs a day and then bringing in. Emma (currently looking for a new livery yard!)

its the pits isn't Emma. What I am stressing about most is Nancy last night was very spooky- she is not a spooky horse- so- I start thinking ULCERS!!! I start to panic. I have her on succeed and I am giving her a scoop in the morning too, double dose, but its not the point!! All for the sake of having 'nice' fields. Bronte is coping incredibly well and to be honest I am quite surprised. I am not getting home till about 9pm, one its taking me ages to muck them all out, (last night I was allowed to turn out whilst I mucked out) so I have to, put out, bring in, do jobs, work Nancy and last night I spent a good couple of hours performing the 'Masterson Technique on her to try and relax her. What people don't get is its the equivalent to you sitting at a desk for 24hours and not being able to stretch (or see anything because my stables are in a barn). Jo (looking for another livery yard). MTA and what doesn't make sense is the horses at the other end of the yard (all owners manage their own fields & stables but all owned by same person) are allowed to turn out. Plus, they say can turn out later when fields are a little dryer- they are not going to dry. Nobody is happy about it on the yard and one girl who moved (like I did) because of the turnout and is travelling the same distance as me is not happy either, she has one that is 15months old so needs to be out. Ok rant over

I am a yard owner and everyone goes out everyday if they want, on the hideous days they don't want to and when it's not hideous they stay out. But.... My fields are in total sh*# the mud this year is worst in 4 winters as it's been so wet. And while I put mine out because it's better for them it is torture for me because I don't have great ground and I can't change that, it cost me a lot of money to put grass in those fields as well as to keep grass in the fields, with so much wet the grass is ruined-as in gone, it will take a lot longer for them to recover in the spring than if I put the horses out less, I will have to pay to have the fields rolled, reseeded etc etc etc A lot of yards do not do any winter turn out, and yes I advertise that they get winter turn out but do advise that that is except horrendous rain etc. Once snow/ice comes they all stay out! It costs a lot more to repair the damage to the ground and people demand such cheap livery these days it's not financially worth the hassle! People phone me in December looking for grass livery and I laugh, December grass livery is more expensive than December in at night livery, because it does cost me more. But people that don't have land dont get that!! That said, I'm sure there are places with better ground or more land that can do it cheaper!

our land doesn't bog up, its moss so stays quite firm. And we have two fields, one for winter one for summer. Thats why it doesn't make sense, we also had a lot of rain in the summer but could stay out. I'm just worried about the welfare of my horses.

Rain in the summer is totally different to rain in the winter, this has been one of the wettest autumns in Wales and our fields are free-draining but wetter than ever. We do allow our liveries turnout every day and accept that the winter fields will be sacrificed, but a large portion of your livery costs will be used up on land management on a decent yard. I am a bit confused at your description of your land as moss - moss generally means very poor grass and poor soil structure which will not withstand winter grazing. I sympathise with you as your YO promised winter turnout which is not being provided, which is unfair in my book.

Not right if you were told one thing and then they have changed it but don't be too hard on yard owners, as has been said before putting ground right is expensive and time consuming and depending what weather you get in the spring you have to be very good at seizing the right momnet for putting things right. As also said rain in summer gets sucked up into growing grass, once it has dropped below a certain temp, there will be no use for it other than to stand on the ground. Our land is clay - winter grazing (our own therefore not the end of the world if we have to trash it) is 18 horses on 14 acres. with hard standing and stabling, looks ok at the moment as it's been rested but I will be lining up for the funny farm come Feb and as much as I prefer the 24 hour turnout if it gets really bad they will start coming in. Maybe if you don't end up in heaven at Jens:) you should have a chat with the YO - they are people, it shouldn't be like talking to the tax man!!!! no offence to tax men/women throughout the land.
