a) walk them away from the gate and turn back to face the gate before letting them go? OR
b) walk away from the gate and then let them go without turning them?
Just curious to see the most popular way.

Through the gate and then turn around to face the gate.

Usually through the gate, then turn back to face the gate, as I have to shut the gate behind me anyway. My two are both very polite and always wait patientlywhilst I shut the gate and take their headcollars off.

neither.,... horses lives in his field, we have no luxuries like a stable or a yard, just a bit corralled off, so he gets taken in there, untacked and fed, rugged before being let go...
but if we had a yard with stables... it would depend on his nature.... I used to let S go before the gate, open the gate and allow him to walk through unaided, close gate, then give him a carrot.

Hhhmmmm....neither! I tend to walk in with horsey and then sort of turn to the left about 120 degrees (rather than the full 180 degrees) so that horsey is more inclined to go the right straight into the field (espeically if they are excited) rather than giving them the opportunity to turn left or right once I turn them loose if I were to turn them to fully face the gate.
That probably didn't make any sense but the short answer would be yes I always turn them back towards the gate rather than just let them go head first as such!

If the gate is closed I would turn them towards the field before letting off so there was no chance of them knocking into me when turning round. If I was not closing the gate before letting off I would also point them away from the gate to allow me to get through it before they thought they could get out. If they are lively and wanting to go off in a rush I think it is much safer to point them to the open field than to release them in a more confined way towards the gate. However they all know they will not be let off the headcollar unless they are standing quietly, but that does not stop them galloping off one released.

I turn them round, and always aware of where they back feet are, although my two are very well behaved usually.

Depends on the horse... with Sandy I know she'll just stand patiently and drop her head for her headcollar to be taken off, before either wandering off or standing still incase I have a treat for her, lol! But in fairness I can just kick the gate shut behind us anyway.

For mine it depends on the layout around the gate and how difficult it is to get them in and gate closed before anything else tries to sneak out, most of the time I'd turn them before letting go. For horses I don't know I always walk them in and turn them before letting go.

Ask anyone else to move out of my way (usually Blue cos she thinks she's boss ) ,open gate and ask Malaga to go through, turn round and wait.Ask him to look at me,drop his head and then remove the halter.Ask for him to stand for a rub then I leave quietly and give him permission to leave quietly too

I usually ask mine to stop and stand just before the gate with leadropes chucked over their necks while I open it and then they walk through and wait for me to take their headcollars off on the other side. Works most of the time, fuelled by food rewards. So b) in effect.
