I recently bought a PRE gelding, aged 11, with a badly fallen crest. This happens when the owner lets the crest get too big, often with stallions, and the crest topples over to one side.
I saw this horse in Horse Deals and thought him very reasonably priced, but the ad said he had a blemish which wouldnt affect him or his health. I contacted the owner, whom it turned out I knew- she brings in a few Spanish horses each year, and is reputable in every way. So I arranged to go and see him at the Wales and West dressage show, and rode him there to try him. He is hot, very hot! But is a sweetie. He had been for sale for some time, because although his neck came back up when ridden, prospective buyers took one look at him in the stable, despite having seen video of him, and turned away without even trying him.
I loved him and negotiated an incredibly cheap price, partly because the owner wanted him to go to me, knowing I would give him a very good home. So two months ago today, Ribereno, Reno to his friends, came to live here.
This is how he looked the day after he arrived.
This was last week
He has been on Pure Feeds Pure Condition, and has had gradual work to get him calmer and to muscle up his topline. I confess even I didnt expect him to change this quickly. I think that within another month to six weeks, the neck will have come back up altogether, even now, we hardly notice it. So the others who turned him down, their loss is my gain!
He really can move, and when I get him less tense and hurried in his work, he will be quite a horse! Will post some ridden photos soon too!
