I got mine from horsesfirst, I think I got a 25kg sac for about £15 or similar, I can't recall now. Needless to say 14 months and 3 horses later I've barely dented the surface!

Natural Horse Supplies for me too - I use a heaped teaspoon daily (about 7g) and it's lasted me ages. Never thought of farm supplies, although to be fair I don't know where they all are round here anyway! Is it all the same quality??

does anyone know what the purity of Taycrest's Magnesium Oxide is please? Is there any info on their 10kgs bags of the stuff?
I know Jackie's is something like 5.6grams of pure Mag Ox to every 10grams of the stuff if i remember correctly... someone correct me if i'm wrong there!

Current price from Equimins: £5.90/1kg, £16.45/3kg, £25.75/5kg. This one contains 59.1% magnesium, according to their info. Looks like any other "heavy" magox to me.

I buy the 25kg sacks from agricultural feed merchants, lasts for years!! I've bought calcined magnacite and mag ox in the past that way, best to ask in the spring when farmers feed it to the cows to prevent some sort of disease that the cows get when going out onto new pasture after the winter. Staggers?

Doh, i just chucked out the info sheet with the Taycrest purity info, it is very high because that was important to me when buying it, and its for the human pharmaceutical and food industry. If I happen across the exact % I'll post it here but you could also phone them, they are really lovely people and very helpful.

Thanks very much frecklesmum... the purity % is the important bit for me too, as i have a little EMS/Insulin Resistant horse now and he's been on Jackie's Mag Ox for a good while now, but do not want to jeapardize the quality of the magnesium oxide i'm feeding him...
If you do come across the info i'd be much obliged!.. and yes,.. when i get a mo i could give them a call.
Thanks again!

I'm surprised nobody has put Equine America's Magnitude, 908g tub for £19 ish. A 500kg horse only requires 5g dose per day so lasts 6 months. ETA 99% pure magnesium oxide which is why so little is needed.

Just out of interest do people, test their horses magnesium levels before they feed it ? I recently did a blood test and found out the magnesium levels were high ,but the selenium level was low . I think the magnesium was high due to the fact that i feed a lot of speedy beet ,it might be cheaper to buy beet

There is 5.6g of elemental magnesium available per 10g Magnesium Oxide, which is different to purity - I believe Jackie's Mighty Mag is 99% pure.
I buy 4kg at a time from Jackie, which comes to £51 plus £6.50 p&p so significantly cheaper than Equine America's Magnitude, which would work out at around £80 for 4kg at the same purity. She recommends 10g per day for a 500kg horse.

Admit, very good value but not cheaper if you work it out. For a 500kg horse:
Magnitude £19 for 908g - at 5g / day lasts 180 days = 10.6p per day. Jackie's: £57.50 for 4 kg - at 10g / day lasts 400 days = 14.3p per day.
Unless my maths is wrong!!!

But both are of equal purity, it's just that Jackie recommends double the dosage. If you fed the same dosage as recommended by EA then Jackie's would only cost 7.15p per day

I think magnesium is either used or excreted quite quickly... so blood tests aren't a foolsafe indicator, and its also good if any supplementary form can be fed in more than one meal. Pasture analysis is useful if its providing the bulk of the diet.
ETA: I believe Taycrest is 99% pure.

"Jackie recommends double the dosage". (sooty quote)
Oh, I see! Interesting to know as I do add a tinsy bit extra on hunting mornings (for calming effect) but have never dared to actually double the amount, even although I've read that extra to requirement is excreted. May be a bit braver in my additions this season then!!
