We are absolutely thrilled with the amount of money you have all raised for Shy Lowen so far. It is wonderful that so many of you are making such a brilliant effort. Our horses and ponies are thrilled too.
I apologise that I haven't given you an update since our big Welsh Carneddau Hill Pony rescue and the lack of an update is, in part, due to those same little Welsh Ponies. We still have 10 in the sanctuary ranging in age from under a year to rising 4. It's quite a challenge to have so many unhandled little ones all at the same time.
We've started putting together a proposal to help these ponies going forward based on some of the successful youth programs in USA where disaffected youth are helped by the 'taming' of mustangs. The youth benefit, the mustangs benefit and society benefits. We're proposing to do the same with the unwanted feral ponies around the UK. There may at least be less unnecessary deaths as a result.
We also sadly lost Oscar our first 'wild cat' (Oscar Wild Cat). He lived at the sanctuary for ten years after he just moved in shortly after we started. He'd was completely feral when we met but became very tame as time went by. He died on 26th January and then later that day Ginty, one of our very elderly horses, had to be put to sleep when she lost a battle with illness. They can both be seen on the Rainbow Bridge page of our website www.shylowen.com
We're just seeing a little bit of movement with people looking to rehome horses and ponies and one or two have or are moving to their 'place in the sun'. Sadly we're still inundated with requests for us to take horses in. We're also keeping an eye on the situation Caroline has raised on the DG with the Dartmoor Hill Ponies for whom time seems to be running out.
We had an Open Day planned for this Saturday 3rd April but we've had to reschedule that to 25th April owing to the shocking weather we've had this week - everywhere is under water again...............
We're really excited and looking forward to Catrin coming along on 18th April for the Animal Communication Workshop which should be a very interesting day for all concerned - it coincides with the 32nd birthday of our oldest resident Mystic Moose who was a 'chaser, he ran his last race on 27th February 1988 at Doncaster, I'm sure Moose has lots of stories to share.
