Such a pain one of my old horses had same thing, it spead right under her belly. The vet gave me lots of lotions/potions for her that never worked. In the end don't know why but i bought some verkon E sachets and it shifted it, it never came back either.

Blue had mange approx 10 years back and itched his back legs til they were raw. He must have caught it from a passing fox. The treatment was to wash his legs with something I cant recall the name of and then do it again 10 days later. He was fine straight after washing and never caught it again although we moved yards soon after.

Now ChestnutMare has mentioned it - it was the Verkon E sachets that we used.

I use Virkon to disinfect the boxes during the summer.... good stuff kills everything including the Streptoccus Equi bug (the one that causes strangles)

Also recommended/required as treatment of everything "horsey" that you want to take to Iceland, for quarantine reasons. Got some sachets (less than £2 each) from Robinsons online for that purpose. Though I'm not sure about treating an animal with it. I'd ask the vet about that.

This may be way off, but given where the problem seems to be it strikes me that it might be some sort of reaction to his own droppings. Does he by any chance have a rug with a tail fillet? The only reason I ask is that my two both do, and they get a bit messy in exactly the same place that you've described your horse being itchy - top half of leg, back and inside.
If that is the case, once you've got it healed up (and assuming you can) a good dose of baby oil all over the area might help keep it at bay in future.

His legs are healing well He is on a reducing dose of steroids and so far so good. The vets all think he will end up off steroids and fine and I will never know what caused it. I personally think it is fungal in origin, he had rwo lots of antibiotics close together for an infected over reach from hunting and for an infected ulcer he had on his eye. Every time I have antibiotics I also have to have anti fungal capsules as I always end up with an infection afterwards and I think he could be the same. He is on Global Herbs Restore at the moment so I dont know if that is helping or not. But he is now ready to work again if I want to but I have not to get him sweaty in case ir makes things worse opening up his pores or take him through any manky bogs yet.

Definitely not from his own poo. He is very clean and dry, never has the runs even getting ready to go hunting he still does elephant dumps. His rugs has leg straps too and they are clean. I did wash them actually but they were clean anyway. Ive also been putting Canesten on the wrst bits and it has helped I think. I have used Virkon before, you can bathe them in it all over. I may just get some in and wash his stable out and do his legs with it occasionally from now on. Some people are thinking that the bottom of his back legs are affected as they are furthest away from the heart and toxins and other nasties can collect there in tmes of inactivity or stress or after dosing. It is definitely not mites of any kind he has been done with Dectomax regularly anyway and intensively since this flared up.

If he's been on antibiotics, I'd really recommend a good course of something like Pink Powder to put back into his gut the good bacteria which aids food digestion. It is possible that his problem is auto-immune.

Yes it is auto immune or so the vet thinks. Hes on Restore which is a strong detox for horses.
