Yaaay!!! it's so mild here that I took my lots rugs off this morning. Happy happy horses...they showed me how happy they were by all throwing themselves into deepest boggiest part of field and rolling blissfully. Despite the heavy rain I've left them all unrugged tonight, checked them this evening and they were all warm and content. In January!!!! Can't belive it's SO warm !!!

Gordo, great isn't it? Forecast says the cold weather is coming back, so it's a lovely interlude.

Milllie had her rugs off, and was groomed to within an inch of her life by the rest of the gang! The look of utter bliss on all their faces was worth the work it took to get the hairy bog monsters clean enough to have their rugs bag on!

Ha my two mares usually do endless mutual grooming without their rugs. However, they looked at each other after they'd rolled and peeled off in opposite directions. Mouthful of mud? Ooooh no missus!

Oh poor Tomrabbit!! Mild here in Kent too! Blaze is moulting like crazy but I have had to clip her today as she is just getting so hot when I work her and I have to ride in the morning because it takes the rest of the day to cool her off! Only problem is........... now it's not cold, it is just soooo wet! has been raining here since last Friday, with very little let-up. Mud now up to the eyeballs! At least with the snow they were coming in clean and their feet looked fab. Roll on Summer xx

I wanted to take mine off but they have just been fully clipped and it hasn't stopped peeing down for the last 72hrs so i am loathe to let them get soaked through then cold and shivvery so instead i have thrown them armbands and a new dinghy and they are turning into Seahorses instead...................

Not sure what to do! 8 degrees today, but this time yesterday it was 1 degree. Probably when I next get to the yard it will be 1 degree again...

have to say we still have lying snow.. although it is beginning to thaw now... but right thro the coldest (below minus 20) Neets seemed just as happy unrugged... it's not been windy or wet and am realising that just cold (as long there's forage provided when grazing frozen / snow covered) isn't really a problem..... and Neets at least is happier unrugged.. in these conditions I suspect most healthy horses are better off unruged.. if they're unclipped..

I really feel for you guys who still have snow on the ground, what an endless winter it must seem. (Sorry Tomrabbit !!). I so hope the thaw comes your way soon. It was 12 degrees here yesterday and it felt like a minor heatwave. Lawd knows how'll we'll cope when it reaches a heady 20 degrees, we'll all be fainting in the heat...

Just a thought - rolling in mud can be the horse trying to add another layer to stop heat loss, so maybe they have felt the cold (and wet) and taking their rugs off is not what they would have done if they had the choice?

Well, 12C here, and my mare is having some rug free fun. I have it stashed on the back of the quad in case it starts raining before I had planned to put it back this evening.
I'd say the rolling is tickling the skin, not putting on a mud coat Jill surely.

We actually had a bit of sun on Sunday so I removed the boys rugs and they both stood slowly munching hay, eyes half shut enjoying the sun on their backs, was lovely to watch and glad I took the chance as it's been rugs back on and rain ever since!

I'd say the rolling is tickling the skin, not putting on a mud coat Jill surely. If so, why not use a dryish patch? Tiny Tim, when he was first turned out in a paddock used to roll in the wettest sloshiest patch by the gate, although there was plenty much drier further in. MTA Tiny Tim had just come out of training and had been used to standing in swathed in stable rugs all day every day. He did wear a good qquality full neck rug when we put him out but he was a bit nesh!
